SUMMARY:

Reports to the Manager - Maintenance and performs skilled journeyperson-level mechanical work involving the inspection, diagnosis, maintenance, repair, modification, calibration, and servicing of the District's fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, grounds equipment, aerial lift devices, forklifts, and other specialized equipment.

The Vehicle and Equipment Services Mechanic is responsible for independently planning and prioritizing work, responding to equipment breakdowns, conducting field repairs, performing preventative maintenance, maintaining regulatory compliance, and ensuring fleet reliability and operational safety. The position serves as a key in-house mechanical resource supporting the district's fleet vehicles and equipment using sound judgment to assist with the diagnosis and resolution of a range of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment issues..

DUTIES:

1.     Inspects, diagnoses, services, repairs, overhauls, and performs preventative maintenance on a wide variety of District vehicles, heavy-duty equipment, grounds maintenance equipment, aerial lifts, forklifts, trailers, and powered equipment.

2.     Diagnoses and repairs gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, electronic, steering, suspension, brake, drivetrain, emissions, and fuel systems.

3.     Reads, interprets, and applies complex wiring schematics, electrical diagrams, service manuals, hydraulic valve schematics, hose routing diagrams, and technical specifications to diagnose and repair equipment.

4.     Programs, calibrates, configures, and updates vehicle electronics, fleet management systems, safety systems, diagnostic equipment, and specialized tools and equipment.

5.     Conducts vehicle and equipment inspections to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations, manufacturer specifications, and District standards.

6.     Reviews and follows up on weekly vehicle inspection reports, identifies deficiencies, prioritizes repairs, and ensures corrective action is completed.

7.     Responds to vehicle and equipment breakdowns at District sites and performs emergency troubleshooting and repairs in the field.

8.     Performs welding, fabrication, and modification work related to vehicle and equipment repairs and maintenance.

9.     Operates diagnostic equipment, computerized testing systems, scan tools, and specialized trade equipment.

10.   Communicates with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, service providers, and technical representatives regarding repairs, warranties, technical issues, parts availability, and equipment specifications.

11.   Works closely with Procurement and departmental managers regarding fleet replacement planning, new vehicle purchases, equipment specifications, tools, and capital equipment requirements.

12.   Researches, sources, orders, receives, and picks up parts, materials, tools, and equipment required for maintenance and repair activities.

13.   Maintains inventory levels of repair parts, fluids, consumables, tools, and equipment required for efficient operations.

14.   Provides recommendations regarding fleet lifecycle management, equipment replacement, preventative maintenance schedules, and repair strategies.

15.   Maintains accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, repair documentation, work orders, equipment histories, and regulatory compliance records.

16.   Loads, unloads, transports, and operates District vehicles, equipment, aerial lifts, forklifts, and other machinery as required.

17.   Plans, coordinates, and prioritizes multiple projects, repair requests, preventative maintenance schedules, and emergency repairs while ensuring service continuity.

18.   Ensures the mechanical shop, tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a clean, safe, and organized condition.

19.   Remains current with evolving vehicle technologies, diagnostic systems, alternative fuels, emissions systems, safety regulations, and industry best practices.

20.   Applies safe work practices at all times and ensures compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations, District policies, and applicable legislation

21.   Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.

Possession of a valid Interprovincial Red Seal Automotive Service Technician Certificate.

Minimum five (5) years recent related experience maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment, preferably in a municipal, school district, government, or commercial fleet environment.

Valid certification as: Aerial Lift Operator, Elevated Work Platform Operator, Commercial Vehicle Inspector, and Forklift Operator.

Demonstrated ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.

Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams, electrical schematics, hydraulic valve diagrams, hose routing diagrams, technical manuals, and equipment specifications.

Experience programming, calibrating, configuring, and updating vehicle systems, electronic controls, fleet equipment, and diagnostic tools.

Proficiency in the use of computerized diagnostic equipment, scan tools, electronic testing devices, welding equipment, hand tools, and power tools associated with the trade.

Experience performing welding and fabrication repairs related to vehicle and equipment maintenance.

Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and make technical decisions with minimal supervision.

Strong organizational skills and demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, service requests, and emergency repairs simultaneously.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with suppliers, District staff, and management.

Thorough knowledge of current automotive, commercial vehicle, fleet maintenance, safety, inspection, and preventative maintenance practices.

Thorough knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, manufacturer requirements, WorkSafeBC regulations, and safe work practices.

Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's License with a safe driving record. Class 3 Licence with Air Brake Endorsement is considered an asset.

Physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including lifting, climbing, welding, operating equipment, and working in varying environmental conditions.

Ability to work independently as the sole mechanic responsible for the District's vehicle and equipment maintenance program.

Physical ability to perform the duties required.

Knowledge of WCB and WHMIS regulations. Safe work habits.
