Job Summary:The Principal is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the educational facility, ensuring that school policies, regulations, and procedures are observed and that all students are supervised in a safe and welcoming learning environment. He or she will work with all school staff to provide leadership regarding the school's curriculum, financial and procedural administration, scheduling, extracurricular activities, emergency operations, facilities management, and management of conduct and discipline. The Principal will also serve as a role model and assist staff and students in achieving an optimal educational experience. Other duties will be assigned as required.
Overall principal responsibilities include:Setting performance objectives for students and teachers. Implementing and monitoring school policies and safety protocols.Overseeing administrative tasks.Developing programs to improve overall student and teacher performance.Meeting with parents to discuss concerns about students.Implementing a curriculum for academic success while maintaining compliance with government guidelines.Creating goals and benchmarks for students and teachers to track progress.Coordinating schedules for staff to optimize efficiency and workplace satisfaction.
Job Duties: Academic Functions:Monitor instructional and managerial processes to ensure that program activities align with program outcomes and use findings to take corrective action.Regularly consult with the campus-level committee about planning, operation, supervision, and evaluation of the campus education program. Include students and community representatives when appropriate.Maintain and promote high standards for all staff and students regarding academic performance, personal growth, responsibility, and character.Manage, evaluate, and supervise procedures, operations, curricula, extracurricular activities, and discipline to ensure a safe and welcoming learning environment.
School Morale:Provide instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing instructional goals.Foster collegiality and team-building among staff members. Encourage their active involvement in the decision-making process.Ensure two-way communication with staff, students, parents, and the community. Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to staff and students.Recognize excellence and achievement.Ensure the effective and prompt resolution of conflicts.Display highly ethical, professional behavior, serving as a role model to all staff and students.
School Improvement:Build a common vision for school improvement with staff. Direct planning activities and implement programs with staff to ensure the schools mission is achieved.Develop and set annual campus performance objectives.Develop, maintain, and use information systems and records necessary to track campus progress on performance objectives.Establish and maintain an orderly learning environment that instills accountability and ensures high morale among staff and students.
Personnel Management:Interview, select, and orient new staff.Define expectations for staff performance regarding instructional strategies, classroom management, and public communication.Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences with staff.Make recommendations to the Director on the termination, suspension, or non-renewal of employees assigned to the school.Confer with subordinates regarding their professional growth. Work with them to develop and accomplish improvement goals.
Student Management:Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that improves student behavior and enhances the school climate.Notify appropriate authorities if evidence of child abuse, child neglect, severe medical conditions, student self-harm, or student substance abuse is found.Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable in accordance with the Code of Conduct and student handbook.Conduct conferences regarding student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.Review, sign, and provide quarterly student report cards to parents.Present special awards and recognition for academic, athletic, and social achievements.
Administrative and Facility Management:Manage the use of school facilities. Supervise maintenance to ensure a clean, orderly, and safe campus.Comply with First Nation policies and state and federal laws and regulations.Ensure that all health and safety considerations are addressed and observed at all times.Oversee program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, emergency management, and school budgets.Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.Supervise all instructional programs, evaluating instructors and lesson plans.Oversee all discipline and attendance measures.Address inquiries from parents, students, staff, and the Board.Establish a professional rapport with staff and students.Develop and maintain clear emergency procedures, conducting regular drills for fire and other emergencies.Oversee the secure and legally compliant storage of all staff and student records and other documentation.Oversee all special events and functions, including but not limited to assemblies, concerts, guest speaker engagements, fairs, fundraising events, dances, and graduations.
Community Relations:Establish and maintain a positive image of the school in the community.Articulate the schools mission to the community and solicit support in achieving the mission.Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parental involvement.
Qualifications:Degree in Education; a masters degree is preferred.Previous experience as a principal or in a similar role.Knowledge of school administrative processes and national educational regulations.Hands-on experience with MS Office and education management systems.Excellent presentation and communication skills.
Competencies:Post-secondary degree and 35 years of related experience preferred.Strong interpersonal, organizational, public relations, and teamwork skills.Ability to work independently and as a team member.Initiative to set priorities and identify plans of action.Ability to work effectively with committees, the administrative team, school personnel, parents, students, and community members.Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations for education, agreements, and policies.Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from staff and the public.Maintains confidentiality and integrity, showing respect for staff, parents, and the public.Ability to adapt to and learn new software.High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and reasoning.Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.Strong organizational, time management, and prioritizing skills.Attention to detail in all areas of work.Valid BC Drivers License and Drivers Abstract clearance.Criminal record check clearance.

Work Conditions:Interacts with staff, students, visitors, and government agencies/personnel. Travel may be required. Ability to attend and conduct presentations. Manual dexterity is required to use a desktop computer and peripherals. Overtime may be required. Lifting or moving up to 10 lbs may be required.
