Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) is seeking a skilled and experienced person to join our team as a Term Literacy Coordinator (1.0 FTE) starting September 1, 2026, or as soon as practicable, through until June 30, 2027. Reporting to the District designate, the Literacy Coordinator will function as a member of an interdisciplinary zone team and be charged with providing fluid and flexible literacy support(s) for teachers and schools across the District.

About the Role

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Operating within a multi-tiered system of support, the Literacy Coordinator will assist school staff across the district by:

  • Providing Instruction and Assessment support to schools and teachers around targeted literacy interventions.
  • Coordinating and facilitating school literacy intervention programs.
  • Coaching and collaborating with teachers to identify the literacy needs of students, set learning goals and targets, and problem solve with teachers to develop best practices for continuous academic growth of students in literacy.
  • Assisting teachers with the collection of data using District Common Formative Assessments, analysis of data results, and supports the sharing of findings with all staff.
  • Review student achievement and assist with placing students in appropriate reading and writing intervention and support services in collaboration with SBT.
  • Assist staff using software and materials related to literacy programs.
  • Meet regularly with the classroom teachers to plan literacy instruction that correlates with the Individual, small group, or whole class needs, or as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Provide professional learning opportunities to enhance knowledge of pedagogy and content, especially literacy.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities related to literacy as assigned by supervisor(s).

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education and Child Care Teaching Certificate required.
  • A Bachelors’ degree in Education or equivalent required.
  • Literacy Specialist Training or Reading Specialist Training, is considered an asset.
  • A Master’s degree in Education (M.A. or M.Ed.) or related field is considered an asset.

Assignment:  Term position, September 1, 2026, or as soon as practicable through to June 30, 2027 (Full-time, 1.0 FTE)

Salary:  $62,657 - $113,004 per annum

Location:  District wide and based on operational needs.
