Integrated Child and Youth Peer Support Worker

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) is seeking a skilled and experienced person to join our team as an Integrated Child and Youth Peer Support Worker. Under the direction of the Integrated Child and Youth Clinical Counsellor, the Integrated Child and Youth (ICY) Peer Support Worker is responsible for drawing on their own lived experience, to offer peer-based mentoring and emotional support, and work collaboratively with youth, their families, and members of the care team. Acting as a role model, the ICY Peer Support Worker helps young people and their families work towards their self-identified goals, by supporting them with systems navigation and connecting them with resources on the ICY team and within the community.

About the Role

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one mentoring and emotional support to children and youth up to 19, by way of a peer support model.
• Work in an integrated way within a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with organizational, community, and hospital-based teams.
• Access supervision to support regular consultation, learning and reflections as applied to the role of Youth Peer Support worker.
• Participate in integrated care planning conferences, team meetings, case reviews, and organizational initiatives as required to provide input from the child/youth and their family’s perspective.
• Participate in training opportunities through the ICY team and employer organization, and in evaluation, quality improvement and research activities as required.
• Complete and maintain related records and documentation pertaining to organization and ICY teams.
• Facilitate youth engagement and participation in focus groups, workshops, surveys, and related activities.
• Attend school district and community events to engage with the community and provide information on the ICY program.
• Act as a primary point of contract throughout the child/youth’s journey of care.
• May on occasion be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• Grade 12 Graduation Dogwood or Completion Certificate, including 2 years of related experience working with youth and young adults with mental health and/or substance use issues or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
• Lived understanding of mental illness and/or substance use, completion of/eligible for, completion of a recognized youth peer support-training program. Lived experience and/or understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusive practices (i.e. Indigeneity, anti-racism, LGBTQ2+) as it relates to the local population.
• Completion of a recognized Peer Support Training program.
• Current level one first aid certificate with CPR-C and naloxone training.
• Basic computer skills: experience with Microsoft Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• As well as the ability to travel and navigate across the Nanaimo – Ladysmith districts with a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License, clean drivers abstract, along with consistent access to a vehicle with business insurance registration.

Assignment:   This is a continuing 12-Month CUPE Local 606 position, due to commence on September 8, 2026, or as soon as practicable. Working Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Wage: The rate of pay for this position is $31.78 per hour based on a 35-hour work week, with a competitive benefits and pension package.

Location: This position is based out of NLPS Dufferin location; however, will work and support throughout the District.
