SECONDARY COUNSELLOR

School District No. 42 (SD42) meets the learning needs of approximately 17,000 students of all ages in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and is defined by its determination to keep student learning and growth at the heart of all its decisions. With an annual budget of over $200M and over 2,000 staff, the school district provides K-12 educational services in 22 elementary schools, six secondary schools, and two alternate schools. It also provides a variety of certificate programs and relevant quality life-long learning opportunities through Ridge Meadows College and Continuing Education.

SD42 is looking for a qualified applicant interested in working as a Counsellor in Westview Secondary School, for a 1.0 FTE temporary position, effective September 1, 2026, until June 30, 2027.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide personal, academic, and career counselling to students in Grades 8–12.
  • Deliver group counselling sessions to support student well-being and development.
  • Support the delivery and guidance of the Careers 9 curriculum.
  • Provide specialized international student counselling and transition support.
  • Act as a liaison for international students and their families.
  • Assist students in crisis situations and respond to critical incidents as needed.
  • Facilitate mediation and conflict resolution between students, families, and staff.
  • Coordinate emergency referrals to appropriate services and agencies.
  • Connect students and families with community resources and support services.
  • Support student transitions between schools and educational programs.
  • Liaise with external organizations, including RCMP and other partners, as required.
  • Assist with planning and execution of career exploration and post-secondary events.
  • Organize and coordinate standardized testing (SAT, ACT, TOEFL, CPT, LPI, and other entrance assessments).
  • Monitor student progress and provide guidance for post-secondary planning and applications.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with policies and regulations.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in counselling psychology or equivalent, combined with successful classroom teaching experience,
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate & TQS card
  • The ability to work as part of a strong collaborative team and have excellent interpersonal, communication and collaborative skills.
  • The ability to work with outside agencies including understanding integrated case management.
  • The knowledge and understanding of what an effective school based team looks like and how to organize and operate it.
  • The knowledge of the Ministry requirements for the full Grade 8-12 secondary school program and ability to complete all Ministry documentation necessary to satisfy graduation requirements and to assist students in completing scholarship and bursary applications.
