Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools is pleased to share that we are looking to hire a dedicated Caretaker(s) to join our school district’s Facilities team, in a casual capacity! Whom under the direction of the Operations Manager or designate, performs a variety of caretaking responsibilities at District schools and buildings for the purposes of maintaining overall cleanliness and security in accordance with established procedures.

About the Role - Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of daily custodial tasks including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, scrubbing, dusting, cleaning and disinfecting washrooms, restocking supplies, garbage pick-up and disposal.
- Secures all doors and windows on completion of duties; completing exterior security checks/sets intrusion alarms.
- Tracks usage of custodial supplies, monitoring/performing inventory, and ordering of supplies.
- Operates and maintains a variety of janitorial equipment including vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, burnishers and carpet cleaners.
- Works on assigned projects during school breaks including but not limited to high dusting in gyms, gym floor varnishing, scrubbing and waxing floors, HVAC filters replacement, pressure washing, and exterior window washing.
- Communicates with the school administration including any special requests or regarding activities happening after school hours.
- Reports building emergencies, maintenance issues, or pest control issues directly to the Operations Manager or designate.
- Performs minor maintenance such as changing burnt out light bulbs, checking emergency lights, changing furniture glides, and adjusting desks heights as requested.
- Salts grounds and/or shovels snow when required.
- May on occasion be required to perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Grade 10 education or the equivalent with a minimum of six (6) months related experience.
- Physical capability to perform the job duties including lifting and carrying up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License.
- With WHMIS certificate and ISSA custodian certification or equivalent preferred.
- Ability to work with and maintain cleaning equipment required.
Assignment: Casual with the possibility of picking up additional work as and when required based on operational needs and as per the current Collective Agreement.
Wage: $27.72 per hour with an additional 10.8% in lieu of vacation and statutory holidays.
