The Role

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Planning and Operations, the Building Technician is responsible for planning, design, drafting, and cost estimating related to the construction, alteration, and maintenance of District facilities. This role ensures all work complies with applicable regulatory requirements and supports the effective operation of our schools.

Assignment: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, onsite

Wage: $33.18 per hour, supported by a comprehensive benefits and pension package

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare preliminary designs, sketches, and cost estimates for construction, alteration, and building modifications across various trades
  • Develop detailed working drawings and finalized cost estimates based on approved designs
  • Obtain required permits and ensure compliance with regulatory agencies
  • Operate and maintain drawings using Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) software
  • Investigate facility-related issues and recommend practical, cost-effective solutions
  • Catalogue and maintain facilities records and technical data using both manual and computerized systems
  • Assist with minor renovation and maintenance project planning for annual budget development
  • Provide technical advice and assistance to trades staff, foremen, and management
  • Liaise with District staff, school administrators, consultants, regulatory agencies, suppliers, and trades for design coordination and cost estimating
  • Coordinate minor renovation and maintenance projects completed by external contractors
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Education and Experience
  • High school graduation or equivalent
  • Completion of a recognized drafting or construction program, plus a minimum of three (3) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Eligibility for membership in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC)
  • Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver's License
  • Working knowledge of building trades relevant to the position
