About Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools

Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (SD68) serves over 15,000 students with 2,500 staff across 40 schools and district facilities on Vancouver Island . Guided by our commitment to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI) principles and the Syeyutsus Reconciliation Framework for Truth and Reconciliation, our vision in Nanaimo Ladysmith Public Schools (NLPS) is to create an inclusive and equitable learning community where every individual thrives.

The Opportunity

As a Capital Projects Coordinator, you play a direct role in shaping safe, inspiring, and future ready learning environments for students and staff. Your work ensures that every school project—from new construction to major upgrades—translates District and Ministry priorities into meaningful, long lasting spaces where learning can thrive. This is a chance to bring your technical expertise to a mission driven setting, collaborate with passionate educators and community partners, and leave a tangible legacy across the district's schools.

The Role

The Capital Projects Coordinator plays a key role in overseeing the full lifecycle of assigned capital construction projects, acting as the Owner's Representative to ensure contract compliance, quality workmanship, and accurate documentation of project related changes. In collaboration with School-Based and District Building Committees, the Coordinator supports planning, design, and construction processes while providing guidance on budget, scope, and relevant Ministry and District standards.

The role involves extensive liaison with architects, consultants, district staff, the Ministry, and regulatory agencies, as well as managing and monitoring all financial transactions tied to assigned projects. The Coordinator administers project-related contracts, prepares monthly reports for internal committees, and delivers presentations to the Board of Trustees when required. Additionally, the position coordinates with maintenance staff on related district or Board-managed work, reviews contract documents, supports the Director of Facilities in developing the Capital Plan, and represents the Facilities Department at community, school, and district meetings.

What You Bring

To thrive in this role, you bring 5 years solid experience managing construction or capital projects from planning through completion, along with a strong understanding of building standards, regulatory requirements, and contract administration. This achievement acquired through a technologist or technician certification from an accredited post-secondary institution, will help you be confident acting as the Owner's Representative—reviewing work for quality, liaising with contractors and regulatory agencies, and guiding school  based committees on scope, budget, and design decisions.

You are highly organized and detail driven, you excel at tracking project progress, navigating change orders, and communicating clearly with diverse stakeholders. Experience in the public sector, education, or similarly regulated environments is an asset, but your ability to collaborate, think critically, and drive projects forward is what truly sets you apart

Why Join SD68?

  • Make a lasting impact by helping create safe, inspiring learning environments that support students, educators, and staff across the district.
  • Enjoy professional autonomy in a role that values your technical expertise, judgment, and ability to guide projects from concept to completion.
  • Build a meaningful career in the public sector, contributing to long term projects that benefit the community while enjoying stability, purpose, and room to grow.
