ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
(0.2 FTE TEMPORARY )
School District No. 42 (SD42) meets the learning needs of approximately 17,000 students of all ages in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and is defined by its determination to keep student learning and growth at the heart of all its decisions. With an annual budget of over $200M and over 2,000 staff, the school district provides K-12 educational services in 22 elementary schools, six secondary schools, and two alternate schools. It also provides a variety of certificate programs and relevant quality life-long learning opportunities through Ridge Meadows College and Continuing Education.
SD42 is looking for a qualified applicant interested in working as a Counsellor in our Safe and Caring Schools program, for a 0.2 FTE temporary position, effective September 1, 2026, until the return of the incumbent, but not beyond June 30, 2027; may include a graduated return.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual, small-group, and classroom-based counselling to support students’ intellectual, social, emotional, and personal development.
- Deliver preventative and intervention-based counselling services using developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices.
- Support students in building self-awareness, emotional regulation, social skills, problem-solving abilities, and resiliency.
- Work in an itinerant role across multiple school communities to address diverse and evolving student needs.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, families, and school-based teams to promote student well-being and success.
- Participate in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and other student support plans.
- Provide consultation to staff and families regarding student mental health, behaviour, and social-emotional needs.
- Coordinate referrals and connect students and families with district and community support services.
- Support students and families during school transitions.
- Contribute to student goal-setting, decision-making, and personal planning through age-appropriate activities.
- Maintain confidential and accurate documentation in accordance with district policies and professional standards.
Qualifications:
- A master’s degree in counselling psychology or equivalent, combined with successful elementary classroom teaching and counselling experience,
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with other professionals including school based teams, and the ability to work as part of a strong collaborative team.
