Hours: 7:00am to 3:00pm, Monday-Friday

This position is 100% in-person and at various VSB sites

THE OPPORTUNITY: FLOOR LAYER

The Maintenance & Construction Division carries out many preventive maintenance projects, including repair and large “overhaul” projects on school facilities to protect the infrastructure and to meet code requirements. These are scheduled on a pre-planned basis and schools are not required to request such work. Preventive maintenance includes re-roofing, re-painting, mechanical or electrical upgrade projects, annual fire alarm testing, and a periodic safety check on equipment in buildings and on grounds.

This position may be assigned to any VSB worksite under the auspices of Maintenance & Construction. Employees may be required to move from site to site during the workday. The successful candidate will be required to work with minimal direct supervision in a team environment and maintain collegial working relationships. Staff are required to communicate with school principals, school staff and students to ensure minimal disruption to the learning environment. All employees are required to work safely in accordance with WorkSafe B.C. guidelines.

In this position, you will:

  • Assist with delivering, handling and preparing job sites
  • Transport and carry material to work areas
  • Ensure security of material, equipment and tools
  • Measure, cut and install various floor coverings and bases, this includes linoleum, floor tile, marmoleum, stair treads, carpets, rubber base, etc.
  • Other job duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Red Seal Certificate (Interprovincial Trades Qualification) for Floor Covering
  • Extensive knowledge of the various types of commercial floor coverings and installation methods
  • Experience and knowledge of the appropriate glues and adhesives for installation of floor coverings and bases
  • Training in the safety procedures required in the use of adhesives for installation of floor coverings and bases
  • Ability to meet the high physical demands of the work. Examples of which are exposure to a variety of weather conditions, vibration and noise, dust and flying particles, lifting and carrying heavy objects, physical coordination and exertion in a variety of postures, working in dirty and dusty environments, sustained postures for some tasks, working in confined spaces or heights.

COMPENSATION
The salary for this position is $70,746.00 plus a comprehensive benefits package and Municipal Pension Plan.
