School District No. 42 (SD42) meets the learning needs of approximately 17,000 students of all ages in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows and is defined by its determination to keep student learning and growth at the heart of all its decisions. With an annual budget of over $200M and over 2,000 staff, the school district provides K-12 educational services in 22 elementary schools, six secondary schools, and two alternate schools. It also provides a variety of certificate programs and relevant quality life-long learning opportunities through Ridge Meadows College and Continuing Education.

SD42 is looking for a qualified applicant interested in working as a Counsellor in our Safe and Caring Schools program, for a 0.8 FTE continuing position, effective September 1, 2026. An Elementary School Counsellor in SD42 plays a vital role in supporting the intellectual, social, emotional, and personal development of students across multiple school communities. Working in an itinerant capacity, the school counsellor delivers a continuum of preventative and intervention-based counselling services designed to meet the diverse and evolving needs of young learners. Through individual, small-group, and classroom-based counselling, the counsellor supports students in developing self-awareness, emotional regulation, social skills, problem-solving abilities, and resiliency. Services are grounded in developmentally appropriate, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices and are focused on promoting positive change.

The counsellor works collaboratively with educators, administrators, families, school-based teams, and district and community partners to support student well-being and educational success. This includes consultation, participation in planning processes such as Individual Education Plans, and coordination of services and referrals to community agencies when needed. The counsellor also supports students and families through school transitions and contributes, through age-appropriate activities, decision-making, goal-setting, and personal planning.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in counselling psychology or equivalent, combined with successful elementary classroom teaching and counselling experience,
  • Valid BC Teaching Certificate & TQS card,
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills with other professionals including school based teams, and the ability to work as part of a strong collaborative team.
