Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Transportation and working under their supervision and guidance, the Mechanic performs skilled maintenance and repair work on a variety of school district vehicles and equipment for the district at the journeyman level.

Working with a Preventative Maintenance Program, the Mechanic may adjust the work schedule, given departmental guidelines and the repair requirements that arise. The mechanic keeps records of inspections and repairs. The mechanic supervises the work of a non-certified mechanic, who assists with routine maintenance and repair tasks, and also helps the mechanic with heavy or big jobs. The mechanic has considerable scope for the exercise of independent judgment in determining the repairs required and the methods to be used. The job requires that changes be recommended to established methods or procedures. Work involves a choice of methods or procedures or sequence of operation. Unusual problems are referred to the Transportation Manager.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintains and repairs school buses; other district vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks, tractors; and ground equipment, (e.g., lawnmowers, weed-eaters, chainsaws, fertilizer spreaders, cement mixers etc.)
  • Oversees and/or conducts the regular inspection and maintenance of school buses as part of a preventative maintenance program, including brakes, oil, tires, greasing, exhaust systems, seat upholstery
  • Schedules required repairs appropriately
  • Keeps record of inspections and repairs, as part of the preventative maintenance program
  • Performs electrical work on vehicles including rebuilding starters and alternators
  • Overhauls engines, transmissions
  • Repairs brakes, including air brakes
  • Changes and repairs tires
  • May rebuild or adjust equipment for shop use of for Maintenance/Grounds department, within departmental guidelines
  • Operates equipment such as machining lathe, drills, grinder, micrometers, honing equipment, tire machine, welding tools, hand tools and electrical test equipment such as Engine Analyzer
  • Adjust work schedule of self and/or helper to complete jobs within time constraints
  • Prepares purchase requisitions, and purchases and orders parts as per departmental guidelines
  • Performs bodywork and painting as required
  • In the absence of a supervisor, responds to telephone enquiries on transportation matters, takes messages
  • Sweeps and maintains good order of the shop
  • Performs other related duties as may reasonably be expected of employees in this job

Required Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 Graduation
  • Red Seal Trade Qualification Certificate recognized in British Columbia in Commercial or Heavy-Duty Mechanic
  • Valid Class II with air Brake endorsement drivers license with a drivers abstract to be completed annually
  • Valid Inspector’s Authorization Ticket, or willingness to obtain the license
  • Certified Class C welding ticket would be an asset

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience as a certified Mechanic

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • A thorough and up-to-date knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of a variety of vehicles and equipment of the type used by the school district
  • Skill in the use of welding equipment
  • Ability to assign and check work of non-certified mechanic
  • Ability to work effectively within time constraints and to recognize and adjust priorities
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others including both department and other school district staff
  • Good communication skills to deal with departmental and other district staff, parts suppliers etc
  • Working knowledge of healthy and safe work practices in accordance with WorkSafe BC Regulations for Workers and the ability to instruct others

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Mission Public School District policies and procedures
