District Itinerant Resource Teacher Deaf and Hard of Hearing

The District Itinerant Resource Teacher Deaf and Hard of Hearing plays a critical role in supporting the academic success of students identified as deaf or hard of hearing. Working on an itinerant basis, this position focuses on providing expert guidance and leadership on issues related to hearing loss and deafness. Collaborating with educational and multi-disciplinary teams, the teacher ensures effective service and program delivery while supporting the use of audiological and assistive listening devices essential for student learning. Applicant must have the ability to respect and support family and student choice of language mode and programming in place.

Qualifications/Experience:

  •  Masters Degree in Special Education with a focus on deaf education or a Diploma in Deaf Education
  • Proficiency in the use of audiological devices including BTE hearing aids, BAHA and cochlear implants and assistive listening devices including personal D.M. systems, mini mics, and free field sound systems; ability to troubleshoot equipment
  • Professional Teaching Certificate
  • Membership in the BC College of Teachers
  • Valid BC Drivers License: Class 5 is necessary due to the itinerant nature of this position
  • Demonstrated an understanding of the differences between Signing Exact English, Total Communication, Cued English and ASL and be able to support each in a way that aligns with student and family preferences
  • Successful teaching experience in a regular classroom setting supporting a variety of learners
  • Current knowledge of the Ministry of Education Special Education Services policies, procedures and guidelines
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability informing excellent working relationships with a variety of colleagues which may include classroom teachers, interpreters, intervenors, education assistance, administrators, resource teachers, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability in consulting with teachers, parents, students and community agencies regarding the nature of students strengths and needs, their educational implications and ways to enhance learning and interpersonal relations
  • Demonstrated ability in collaborating with school-based and/or district personnel to gather classroom-based data, design or implement instructional strategies, and design and implement behaviour management interventions
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability in working with School Based Teams, multi-disciplinary teams, and community teams
  • Demonstrated ability to assist in the development of IEPs for assigned students
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in designing and presenting in-service in the area of special education and specifically in the area of support to students with varying degrees of hearing loss accepted by the Ministry of Education guidelines
  

Duties

  • Supporting, modeling and facilitating communication access including speech, oral, auditory, verbal, Cued English, Signing Exact English, Total Communication and ASL.
  • Conduct and interpret functional listening evaluations
  • Provide written yearend reports outlining programming and recommendations
  • Provide assessment, instruction and consultation to educational team members on issues related to assistive technology, program implementation and curricular access
  • Provide school teams with interpretation of audiological reports and their educational impact
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary team collaboration for students with moderate to severe cognitive disabilities
  • Facilitate in and actively implement transition planning and implementation
  • Develop, support and actively implement student IEPs with recommendations for goals, strategies, accommodations, modifications and learning styles as related to the students hearing loss
  • Communicate and liaise with outside agencies for meaningful consultation and program alignment
  • Act as a district partner to Provincial Outreach Programs as directed by the District Principal
  • Other duties as assigned by the District Principal of Inclusive Learning Support
