POSITION: Junior School Teacher

ASSIGNMENT: Learning Assistance Resource (Gr 8-9) This Learning Assistance Resource position supports students and staff working within the POD structure

FTE: 1.0

LOCATION: Quesnel Junior School

EFFECTIVE DATES: Commencing September 1, 2023 and continuing

Basic Qualifications: The successful candidate will hold a valid BC Teaching Certificate and be a member in good standing in the BC Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch AND possesses one or more of the following:

Training Specialization: Secondary Education with a specialization in Special Education

Related Teaching Experience:

  • Recent successful experience teaching in Learning Assistance at the Secondary Level
  • Experience providing programs for learning support

A Reasonable Expectation: based on a teacher's skills, abilities, professional development and overall classroom teaching experience, that the teacher will be able to perform the duties in a successful manner in collaboration with other professional staff

Additional Qualifications:

  • Two or more courses at the 100 or 200 level in Special Education

Other:

  • Willingness to support the school plan for student success
  • Willingness to lead IEP and school-based team meetings and to implement plans for students
  • Commitment to working as part of a team in the development and implementation of the school growth plan and Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement
  • Knowledge of early literacy programs

Learning Assistance Resource Teacher

A learning assistance resource teacher ideally has a major in Special Education. Specific training in supporting students with learning disabilities is desirable.

The Candidate should be able to provide demonstrated experience and ability in the following:

  • a demonstrated ability to support planning that allows access to the curriculum for all students
  • Ability to model instructional strategies which address a wide range of disabilities
  • Ability to lead teams, liaise with outside agencies and maintain extensive records of meetings
  • Ability to support classroom teachers to integrate technology for the purpose of providing access to the curriculum for all students
  • Collaboratively develop and assess programs and IEPs for students with a variety of exceptional needs
  • Training and experience in administering curriculum-based assessment and standardized assessments
  • Writing summaries of assessment results
  • Facilitating communication and coordinating services and resources through a school-based and working team model
  • Ability to support in the initial development of schedules for education assistants and support staff in the school
  • Maintaining accurate and current records of all students receiving support services according to Ministry and District guidelines
  • Offering instructional support in or out of the classroom using resources appropriate for individual student needs and in accordance with Ministry expectations
  • Tracking students with special needs from year to year and ensuring all students are accurately categorized according to Ministry and District guidelines
  • Following all policies, procedures and guidelines for Special Education services as defined in the Ministry of Education Manual of Special Education Services
  • Willingness to work as part of a team in the development and implementation of the School Growth Plan
  • Willingness to work a a member of the School based Team
  • Willing to support whole-school environmental initiatives
  • Commitment to the school-wide Positive Behaviour Support program as a form of addressing behaviour in the classroom

The learning assistance resource teacher provides services to students and staff in the regular classroom as well as alternate environments and must be able to work in a collaborative and consultative manner with classroom teachers, principals, the school-based team, special education assistants and others.

The starting annual salary for this full-time Junior School Teacher, Learning Assistance Resource (Gr 8-9) ranges from $59,394 to $106,217, with placement on the range based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.
