Job Summary & Responsibilities

Teachers of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing provide services to deaf and hard of hearing students throughout the district. They accomplish this through direct instruction, assessment of auditory functioning, speech, language development and academic achievement, providing counseling to students in hearing loss, auditory management, and hearing aid use, providing consultation, workshops and in services to teachers, support staff, parents and other professionals, and acting as a liaison between the school, home, and other agencies for students with hearing loss. The schedule is Tuesday through Friday.

The starting annual salary for this School Teacher position ranges from $49,470.40 to $86,766.40, with placement on the July 1, 2024 Teacher Salary Grid based on length of service and qualifications in accordance with the collective agreement.

Education & Experience

  • Successful teaching experience in Elementary/Middle preferred
  • Master’s Degree (preferred) or graduate diploma in Deaf and Hard of Hearing (Hearing Impairment)
  • Fluent in English or American Sign Language
  • Eligible for B.C. Certification
  • Satisfactory teacher evaluation and/or final practicum reports

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess exceptional presentation skills and be willing to present professional information about Deaf and Hard of Hearing students to classes, school staff and district personnel
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with equipment commonly used for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students (Eg: sound fields, FM Systems, hearing aids, etc)"

  • Assessment & Coaching: Utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learning including the use of formative and summative assessment strategies.
  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectives
  • Caring & Inclusiveness: Create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all students
  • Flexibility & Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in our ability to adjust and adapt to changing circumstances
