The School District

The Board of Education of School District 81 (Fort Nelson) is seeking an accomplished financial leader for the position of Secretary-Treasurer-CFO, with a mutually agreeable start date to be negotiated. The initial competition will close at noon on Tuesday, May 21.

Fort Nelson School District is located in the heart of the Northern Rockies Regional Municipality in Treaty 8 territory, on the traditional territories of the Fort Nelson First Nation, Prophet River First Nation, Acho Dene Koe First Nation, and the traditional home of the Kaska Dena peoples.

The district has approximately 670 FTE students in 4 in-town schools, and one rural/remote school in Toad River. The budget is about $13 million with approximately 125 staff. We have contracted bus and janitorial services.

The Position

The Secretary-Treasurer, as the Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary of the Board of Education and Childcare, fulfills the responsibilities and requirements of the Secretary-Treasurer as outlined in the School Act and Regulations. They have responsibilities in the following specific areas:

  1. Corporate Secretary
  2. Chief Financial Officer
  3. Facilities and Property Management
  4. Student Transportation
  5. Human Resources Management
  6. Administrative Procedures
  7. Organizational Management
  8. Communications and Community Relations
  9. Executive Team

The Secretary Treasurer must carry out all duties with transparency, accuracy, clarity, and close attention to detail, with a high level of personal, professional, and organizational integrity.

Compensation

The base salary for this position is $169,061.00, based upon qualification and experience; or $160,607.00 without a CA designation. School District 81 also offers a competitive benefits package, pension, and professional development funds.

The Candidate

The Secretary-Treasurer is responsible directly to the Superintendent and works closely with the Superintendent and the Board of Education to plan and report on progress and the achievement of outcomes associated with their critical areas of responsibility.

The School District is seeking a professional who is passionate about making a difference in the lives of students in their role as Secretary-Treasurer as well as a progressive leader with a commitment to public education and to the District’s mission, beliefs, and priorities. This individual will have a strong work ethic, be committed to excellence and continuous improvement, and will be a contributing member of the senior team.

The candidate will be empathetic, compassionate, and respectful and will have demonstrated integrity, exemplary interpersonal, organizational, technological, communication, and conflict resolution skills. The candidate will have the ability to positively and proactively represent the district with rights holders, parents, unions, the B.C. Ministry of Education and Childcare, local government and community.

The selected candidate will have at least five years of successful senior level financial and business management experience with the ability to share and report financial information to ensure effective decision making. Ideally, the candidate will have worked in the education field and will hold significant accounting training and experience. It would be most desirable for the individual to hold a professional accounting designation. Familiarity with PowerSchool Atrieve and the BMW budget program would also be an asset.
