24-038 A temporary .1 FTE Teacher Librarian position is available at Cortes School , effective September 03, 2024 through June 30, 2025.

Cortes School is a small rural school located on Cortes Island (About Cortes Island), nestled amongst the spectacular Discovery Islands, at the entrance to Desolation Sound “amidst breathtaking fjords that penetrate the wild west coast of mainland British Columbia”. The island is accessible by ferry, water taxi, or float plane. The school serves the families living on the Island and offers education to students from Kindergarten to Grade 9. Residents of the area enjoy the many recreational activities available on their doorstep; these include sailing, hiking, biking, camping, and fishing (fin fish, shellfish, and crustaceans). Cortes Island is also home to a thriving agricultural and artisanal community. Please note, it is not possible to commute between Campbell River and Cortes Island on a daily basis.

Please note there is a possibility that part-time positions may be combined with other part-time positions at the school.

School District 72 operates throughout a large geographic area. Campbell River and Quadra Island schools and our school board office are located on the traditional territory of the Liǧʷiɫdax̌ʷ people. School District 72 also encompasses the traditional territory of the Klahoose (Cortes), K’ómoks (Sayward), and Xwe’malhkwu (Bute Inlet) First Nations.

Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Relevant university qualifications;
  • A comprehensive understanding of current educational practices outlined in the BC Ministry of Education documents;
  • Committed to the craft of teaching, best practices, and standards of professional practice;
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, communicative, and problem-solving skills;
  • Flexible and adaptive; and,
  • A commitment to professional development and growth.

The successful candidates for these positions must have:

  • A minimum of three (3) university library courses;
  • One (1) year of school librarian experience;
  • Digital and information technology literacy skills applicable to research and library including the ability to manage INSIGNIA software;
  • A demonstrated commitment in support of robust literacy development;
  • An understanding and experience in resource management and evaluation;
  • Knowledge of current educational practices and trends;
  • The ability to coordinate support staff work;
  • The ability to provide instructional support to teaching staff; and,
  • The ability to provide leadership in school and district activities to support the school.

All SD72 teachers will have a demonstrated understanding and commitment to teaching practice that embodies:

  • an inquiry-based and collaborative approach to the delivery of the BC Curriculum;
  • Social/Emotional Learning and an in-depth knowledge of the BC Mental Health Framework;
  • the incorporation of the First Nations Principles of Learning
  • diversity, inclusion, and equity;
  • support for the growth and development of individual learners through differentiated learning techniques; and,
  • the ability to work collaboratively with fellow teachers to plan, develop, and implement an extraordinary learning experience for each individual student.

The starting full time salary for this teaching position ranges from $58,267 and $106,217. Placement on salary scale is subject to verification of experience and certification and will be done in accordance with the current Collective Agreement.
