Working in conjunction with the Work Experience Coordinator and with the general supervision of the school administrator, the Career Advisor works to provide career and post-secondary planning assistance to students that will support them to develop well-informed career plans.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide consistent and measurable career education advisement for all students:
  • Provide information to students concerning admission to post-secondary institutions, including prerequisites, courses offered and course outlines
  • Assist students with career research and post-secondary research; instruct students on the use of career education software and use of internet for career and post-secondary research
  • Provide assistance and coaching to students related to job seeking skills such as interview techniques, resume writing, cover letters, portfolio development and job search strategies
  • Administer and interpret student interest tests and programs such as My Blue Print; facilitate personality assessment workshops for Career Education 10 and 12 such as Personality Dimensions.
  • Attend post-secondary institutions counselor/advisor information days and career education conferences to gather current and relevant information
  • Coordinate special events related to career education, career exploration and work experience, such as field trips, guest speakers, career day, and liaison with post-secondary institutions
  • Gather information and maintain records relevant to the student placement i.e. visit worksite, phone etc and may transport student to worksite as required
  • Organize and promote field trips to universities, trades schools and trade shows
  • Provide support to the career centre
  • Maintain and operate the career centre, including providing advice on determining equipment, supplies and layout of the career centre as required
  • Prepare and/or present information at parent/student/staff information sessions or staff meetings
  • Promote in conjunction with work experience and secondary school apprenticeship programs and school staff, the implementation of Career Ed programs
  • Promote and maintain current information concerning career, post-secondary and labour market information in the career centre and throughout the school
  • Perform other related duties as may reasonably be expected of a person in this position
  • Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with standard software programs including word processing, spreadsheets and databases (e.g. Microsoft office) and ability to learn and apply specific computer programs as required in the job and conduct research by using the internet
  • Working knowledge of post-secondary and training institution student admission requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively and demonstrate good public relations skills, exercising good judgment in dealing with a variety of enquiries
  • Demonstrated ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work with interruptions and to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work co-operatively and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to provide guidance and direction to others; proven ability to explain information and instructions to others

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Career Development Practitioner certificate or equivalent
  • Valid BC driver’s licence
  • A clear Criminal Record Review to be updated every five (5) years

Required Experience:

  • A minimum of twelve (12) months relevant experience in a related role

This position is 35 hrs/wk.
