VICE-Principal – SKEENA MIDDLE SCHOOL

Coast Mountains School District 82 is seeking a passionate and experienced educator to serve our richly diverse student population in the role of Vice-Principal at Skeena Middle School.

Located in British Columbia’s beautiful Pacific Northwest, Coast Mountains School District encompasses a number of communities including the Hazeltons, Kitimat, Kitwanga, Stewart and Terrace, and the surrounding rural areas. The school district covers a large geographic area including the traditional territories of four Indigenous Nations: the Gitxsan, the Haisla, the Nisga’a and the Tsimshian. The region boasts world-class fishing, kayaking, hiking, winter sports and cultural offerings, in addition to a wide array of community services and amenities.

The school district serves a student population of approximately 4,000 students in 19 schools, including 3 alternate programs and a trades training/distance learning centre. Applications are invited for the above continuing full-time position to commence August 1, 2024. Skeena Middle School enrolls 520 students in Grades 7 to 9. The Vice-Principal plays a key leadership role as a member of the School Team. Skeena Middle School is a cornerstone of the community of Terrace, serving a highly energized and active student population. It is dedicated to meeting the academic, artistic, athletic, cultural and social emotional needs of all learners.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated:

  • Successful experience with improving outcomes for Indigenous learners and a commitment to a personal journey toward Truth and Reconciliation.
  • Active involvement in and demonstrated progress toward Reconciliation.
  • Proven ability to establish respectful working relationships with learners, parents, staff, community and Indigenous, Inuit and Metis Peoples.
  • Respect for and commitment to Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Learning.
  • A reputation as a highly effective instructional leader in improving learning success for all students.
  • Understanding and application of formative assessment practices.
  • Success leading classrooms and schools in data informed instruction.
  • Ability to lead progressive systems, which provide innovative learning experiences for students.
  • Knowledge and experience using technology to enhance learning.
  • Continuous inquiry and professional learning for self and others.
  • Knowledge and experience in Learner Support Services and inclusion.
  • Ability to support a positive, cooperative, safe, orderly and caring school environment.
  • Demonstrated respect for diversity.
  • A fundamental belief that all learners can achieve at a high level.
  • Highly successful experience as a Principal, Vice Principal or Teacher Leader.
  • Success in continuing to challenge themselves and grow as a leader in education.
  • A graduate degree in Education, with a focus on leadership or curriculum and instruction, preferably from a Canadian University, and eligibility for membership in the BC Ministry of Education’s Teacher Regulation Branch.
  • Demonstrated skills in working with collective agreements in a unionized environment.
