TITLE: Carpenter Limited Duration
POSITION NOTES: 40 hours per week
DEPARTMENT: Property Maintenance
REPORTS TO: General Manager, Property Maintenance
SUMMARY:
With minimal direction the carpenter performs rough and finished carpentry work in the construction and maintenance of buildings, grounds and ancillary equipment. The carpenter works cooperatively with other employees, students and the public.
DUTIES:
- Constructs, installs, repairs and maintains buildings, furnishings, equipment and carpentry-related grounds projects.
- Performs carpentry-related duties in related areas such as concrete, millwork, glass replacement, drywall and floor coverings.
- Performs layout of new construction and alterations from drawings, sketches and/or specifications.
- Reports parts and supplies inventory levels.
- Reports work completed including time and materials used.
- Directs, advises or assists other employees as appropriate.
- Maintains a clean, safe work environment.
- Performs other maintenance related or emergent duties.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, SKILLS:
- Successful completion of B.C. Apprenticeship Program and a valid B.C. or Interprovincial Trade Certification as a carpenter.
- Minimum one year related experience at the journeyman level.
- A valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System, Workers' Compensation regulations.
- Competent in the use and care of tools and equipment common to this trade.
- Ability to plan and schedule work and organize the workload effectively.
- Ability to work in confined areas and at heights.
- Ability to maintain close attention to detail.
- Ability to use courtesy and tact in the explanation of and discussion of information in contact with students, suppliers and other staff.
- Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED (Carpenter)
Hand tools, power tools, air tools, ladder, truck, lathe, scaffolding and other carpenter's equipment. PHYSICAL ABILITIES
- Sufficient vision to perform duties of a carpenter.
- Fundamental ability to use the tools and equipment of the trade.
- Manual dexterity.
