Education Assistant III (Autism)

PART-TIME POSITION (27.5 hours/week)

The Education Assistant III (Autism) provides support, under the direction of a designated educator, for students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in and out of the classroom and in the community. This includes supporting the student in the areas of communication and language development, social skill development and positive behaviour support as well as supporting academic programming and functional skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Interacts with District support staff and community professionals to assist in the planning, implementation and review of the student's Individual Education Plans (IEP), positive behaviour support plan and safety plan.
  • Reinforces the educational program by tutoring, adapting, or modifying classroom materials to meet the specialized needs of students with ASD.
  • Provides assistance to students with ASD in acquiring skills in the area of communication and language development, behaviour and social skills.
  • Assists with the supervision of the general student population, supervises assigned students in and out of the classroom and in the community.
  • Provides personal and physical care as required.
  • Prepares written reports such as daily or weekly journals; prepares classroom materials; provides input to the IEP process, and performs data collection.
  • Utilizes a wide range of equipment including adaptive / assistive technology.

Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Completion of a one year minimum recognized program in special needs assistance.
  • Minimum one year of relevant experience PLUS 1,000 hours in Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) training documented by a Professional Consultant.
  • Thorough knowledge of ASD and characteristics of effective interventions such as ABA (principles of reinforcement, discreet trial training, task analysis, natural environment teaching, incident teaching and pivotal response training).
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children / students with ASD.
  • Working knowledge of adaptive / assistive technology related to work performed.
  • Demonstrated ability to work at the level of independence and with the degree of initiative appropriate to the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties and responsibilities of this job.
