School District No. 73 (Kamloops-Thompson) is currently accepting applications for the position of Groundsperson. This is a permanent position, and works 8 months per year.
The successful applicant must possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with Code 20 heavy trailer endorsement and have one season proven previous work experience as a Groundsperson, Landscaper, or Labourer in a related area. Applicants must be physically able to perform all duties of the position, and will be subject to a Physically Fit to Work assessment, and a Job Specific assessment.

Under the limited supervision of the Manager of Grounds, the incumbent carries out a variety of normal maintenance tasks related to maintaining school playgrounds and playing fields, involving grass cutting and/or the operation of power driven equipment. Work is varied and requires independent judgement and initiative.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Duties involve a variety of tasks including the safe operation and maintenance of grass cutting or power equipment.
- Performs minor equipment repairs as required.
- Other duties include assisting in the care of flowers, trees and grass, as well as with the installation of sprinkler systems and fence repair.
- Performs labour intensive duties on a regular basis.
- Other assigned job related duties.
ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with the public, students, teachers, Administrative Officers and other employees of the Board.
- Ability to perform a variety of related tasks with limited supervision.
- Ability to operate grass cutting or power driven equipment.
- Working knowledge and operating ability of hand operated equipment used in maintaining playgrounds, playing fields, walks, parking lots and grassed areas.
- Willingness to take training for Fall Protection and any other training related to the assignment.
- Knowledge of snow removal techniques.
- Knowledge of grass cutting techniques, methods of fertilizing, and the care and maintenance of various types of shrubs.
- Knowledge of or willing to take training to safely operate Bobcat, mower, man lift, plow truck, chain saw, forklift, etc.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Preferably Grade 12.
- One season proven previous work experience as a Labourer in a related area.
- Must be physically able to perform all duties of the position.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certificate
- Valid B.C. Class 5Driver’s License with a Code 20 heavy trailer endorsement.
