Summary
The French Language and Literacy support teacher provides language and literacy support to elementary and middle French Immersion schools. The FLLST use a collaborative approach with the classroom teacher and learning support services teacher to address the language and literacy needs of the gr. 1-6 students. The FLLST works alongside the classroom teacher identifying the language and literacy needs of all students and how best to meet them using research-based literacy instruction in the regular classroom.
The FLLST work collaboratively with the classroom teacher, co planning, co teaching, modelling, and co learning. Where students may need additional tier 2 literacy supports, the FLLST collaborates with teachers to help provide small group, targeted intervention.
The FLLST works with the FIM staff in up to three schools over the 5-month period.
Education & Experience
- Elementary/Middle training with learning support or early literacy training
- Elementary/Middle teacher training with French Immersion practicum experience
- Major or diploma in early literacy, learning disabilities or diversity education
- Experience teaching a continuum of skills in all areas of literacy instruction: of phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, comprehension, etc.
- Satisfactory teacher evaluation and/or final practicum report(s)
- Experience working with Late French Immersion
- Eligible for B.C. Certification
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Ability to demonstrate fluency in written and spoken French, plus a good working knowledge of English
- Ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge of the (Elementary/ Middle) French Immersion program
- Ability to demonstrate thorough knowledge of a balanced literacy program including guided reading and assessment

- Facilitation & Engagement: Ability to capture and maintain students’ interest, effort, participation and enthusiasm for both the content and the process of learning
- Assessment & Coaching: Utilize balanced assessment and feedback to improve student learning including the use of formative and summative assessment strategies.
- Collaboration & Teamwork: Collaborate with others to achieve group goals and objectives
- Caring & Inclusiveness: Create and maintain an environment that is caring, inclusive and supportive of all students
- Flexibility & Adaptability: Demonstrate flexibility in our ability to adjust and adapt to changing circumstances
