Manager of Privacy and Cybersecurity

It is acknowledged that Central Okanagan Public Schools operates within the unceded, Traditional Territory of the Okanagan syilx peoples.  The School District enrolls approximately 24,000 students (including over 3000 students who self-identify as having Indigenous ancestry).  Central Okanagan Public Schools is located in the Central Okanagan encompassing the communities of Peachland, West Kelowna, Kelowna, and Lake Country.  There are a total of 51 school sites with 33 Elementary Schools, 8 Middle schools, 5 Secondary Schools, 3 Learning Centres, an Alternate Education School, and an Online Learning School (K-12).  Central Okanagan Public Schools has an excellent reputation of providing outstanding, student-centered programs in a diverse and inclusive environment as well as offering a wide range of educational opportunities for its students and staff.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

Reporting to the Assistant Superintendent, the Manager of Privacy and Cybersecurity, will be responsible for leading and implementing policies and procedure changes to ensure that Central Okanagan Public Schools complies with all applicable laws and regulations regarding privacy and cybersecurity, including the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. You will lead this work on the Learning Technology Services Team to support departments to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks and ensure that data is secure across the organization.

Major responsibilities will include:

• Lead, develop, and implement policies and procedure changes to ensure that Central Okanagan Public Schools continues to comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards regarding privacy and cybersecurity, including FOIPPA and ISO 27001;
• Work closely with the Learning Technology Services team and other departments to identify and mitigate cybersecurity risks, including the use of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security technologies;
• Develop and deliver privacy and cybersecurity training to employees, including training on the use of two-factor authentication, encryption, and other security technologies;
• Review and analyze privacy and cybersecurity incidents and make recommendations for improvement, including the use of threat intelligence, security information and event management (SIEM) tools, and other cybersecurity technologies;
• Coordinate with external auditors and regulators to ensure compliance with industry standards, including ISO 27001, and the use of vulnerability scanning tools and other compliance-focused technologies;
• Stay up-to-date with the latest trends and best practices in privacy and cybersecurity and make recommendations for improvement, including the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning-based security technologies.

The successful candidate must:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or a related field
• At least 5 years of experience in privacy and cybersecurity
• Experience developing and implementing privacy and cybersecurity policies and procedures
• Strong knowledge of applicable laws and regulations regarding privacy and cybersecurity, including the British Columbia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, GDPR, and CCPA
• Experience with risk management and incident response
• Strong communication and leadership skills
