Purpose of Position:

To promote and support a successful inclusive educational experience for secondary school student(s) who are profoundly deaf; and

To assist the teacher and Inclusion Support teacher in creating and maintaining a safe, engaging, accessible learning environment for the student(s).

 
Responsibilities will vary and may include the following:

Under the direction of the classroom teacher(s), Inclusion Support Teacher(s), Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and other Itinerant staff as assigned:

  1. Perform the duties as described in the Education Assistant or Youth and Family Worker job description, relative to qualifications held
  2. Assist with student personal needs, including periodic toileting support, as required
  3. Provide DHH student(s) real time access to auditory information that is concurrently accessible to their hearing peers
  4. Provide visual language support for vocabulary and concepts
  5. Support DHH student(s) in their access to the classroom, curriculum, school activities, and co- or extra-curricular activities
  6. Implement Individual Educational Pans (IEP) and if applicable, Nursing Care Plan
  7. Implement strategies /programs as determined by the Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  8. Support DHH student(s) academically and socially by reviewing and previewing skills, concepts and vocabulary
  9. Adapt established methods or procedures to support DHH student and implement the IEP
  10. Encourage and support DHH student(s) to fully participate in their school experience
  11. Promote successful social interactions by building language concepts, communication skills, and self-advocacy skills
  12. To perform other duties as required to implement the IEP, any Nursing Care Plan, or through the School-based team

Position Specific Educational Qualifications:

  1. Qualified Education Assistant or Youth and Family Worker (according to SD8 Job Description);

    AND

  2. Proof of certification in intermediate American Sign Language (ASL) from a recognized agency.Such proof may be assessed by a qualified internal or external professional;

    AND

  3. Completion of specialized education at the college or university level that includes understanding the unique nature of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing; or, ]Demonstration of equivalent knowledge. Such proof may be assessed by a qualified internal or external professional.

 

Position Specific Experience Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated fluency in signing at an intermediate or higher ASL level.Such fluency may be evaluated by a qualified professional.
  2. Demonstrated experience in signing at a level commensurate or above the grade level of the student(s) assigned to the EA-CF. This experience may be evaluated by a qualified professional.
  3. A minimum of six months working with students who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing and who use sign language for communication.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of a deaf or hard of hearing student’s language and social development.
  5. Experience supporting DHH students academically at the grade level or above the student(s) assigned using ASL.
  6. Experience supporting DHH students socially using strategies determined by the teacher such as: SEL, Trauma-Focussed Schools, PBIS, Executive Function, etc.
  7. A demonstrated understanding of the EA-CF’s role and responsibilities as a team member in a collaborative model.


 
SD8 EDUCATION ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Summary:
The incumbent is assigned to the school based team to provide specialized support for students with identified special needs as directed by the Principal. Must be flexible in assignments. It is expected that all employees will follow district communication protocols and maintain confidentiality. The ability to communicate and work as a team player is essential.

Job Requirements:
1. College of the Rockies SPEDA course; Selkirk College Classroom and Community Support Worker Program and/or equivalent College Program recognized by other School Districts in the Province, or a minimum of one (1) year college level training in the Human Services field with a focus on training in behaviour management, students with special needs.
2. Ability to work effectively with students and adults.
3. Ability to communicate appropriately with other staff members, students and parents as directed.
4. Ability to be part of a collaborative team, maintaining a professional attitude and confidentiality in working relationships with all school personnel, students, parents and the public.
5. Ability to work as part of school based planning team as required – see Special Services District Handbook – page 7 and Collective Agreement – page 101.
6. Ability to be flexible and work with minimal supervision.
7. May be required to dispense approved medications as prescribed by the student’s doctor in accordance with Board Policy No. 310 (September 22, 1998) and be required to sign Request for Medication Form attached thereto. Training will be provided.
8. Ability to work with non-compliant students in a non-confrontational manner.
9. Training in non-violent crisis intervention will be provided.
10. Child-related team requirements and special skills needed will be identified for special assignments. Any special skills required will be outlined on the specific Job Duties portion of the Job Description.
11. May be required to have a valid B.C. (Class 5) Driver’s License.
12. Must have understanding and knowledge of safe work practices.
13. Perform other job related duties as may be assigned.

SD8 YOUTH AND FAMILY WORKER JOB DESCRIPTION:

Job Summary:

An employee assigned to the schools(s) school based team to provide support to students with behavioural, emotional and social disorders, through individual, family and group work as directed by the Principal. If the student(s) the Youth and Family Worker is assigned to work with requires an IEP, the Youth and Family Worker will be expected to work as a member of the IE Planning Team. 

Job Requirements:

  1. University graduation or a minimum of a College Diploma in the Behavioural Sciences field. Two (2) years post secondary education is required. The SPEDA/Selkirk College one (1) year program in human services may count as one (1) year,,but additional university training (e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Interviewing, Youth studies, Counseling theory) is required along with a demonstration of supervised experience in childcare counseling.
  2. Ability to interact and liaise with caregivers, community agencies and other individuals in a non-judgmental and supportive manner.
  3. Ability to communicate appropriately with other staff members, students and parents. Have well developed active listening skills.
  4. Ability to work with non-compliant students in a non-confrontational manner. Training in non-violent crisis intervention will be provided.
  5. Ability to be part of a collaborative team, maintaining a professional attitude and confidentiality in working relationships with all school personnel, students, parents and the public.
