Xpey' Elementary-Indigenous Focus School

Xpey' Elementary is the Indigenous Focus School for the district. We welcome Indigenous and non-Indigenous students from across the district. In concert with the BC Curriculum and Wholistic Learning Framework, we infuse Indigenous ways of knowing, doing and learning into everything that we teach. Currently, we have approximately 85 students. We are a collaborative, tight knit school community. Our 2020-2021 school plan focuses on collaborative inquiry, social and emotional learning (SEL) and Indigenous Education.

Under this special program, the VBE seeks to preferentially hire Indigenous persons to a variety of teaching positions. Qualifications:
- Completion of a Bachelor of Education
- Experience and/or training in an intermediate enrolling class is required
- Deep knowledge, understanding and respect on how to work with Indigenous students and staff from many nations, in order to create an environment that fosters and embraces Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing
- Promotion of Indigenous cultural and traditional knowledge within the school setting to promote a sense of belonging and identity
- Collaboration and implementation of Universal Design for Learning and Differentiation are essential skills
- Commitment to supporting and working as part of the Indigenous school community with a focus on current needs of the school and students in an inclusive setting
- Experience in communicating and planning with the School Based Team, district personnel and outside agencies to support the integration of learners in their classroom. Experience and/or training to adapt classroom programs are an asset
- Experience with formative assessment practices is required
- Membership in or eligible to become a member of the Teacher Regulation Board (TRB)
- Registration with the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS)
