
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the District Principal responsible for Career Education programs and under the general supervision of the Principal (or designate), the Career Advisor performs a variety of functions related to providing information and assistance to students making post-secondary education/career choices. The Career Advisor assists students in researching career and post-secondary information, industry training opportunities, work experience placements, and job-seeking skills.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with Career Education Team to create awareness about all career opportunities and collects information, applications and documents.
- Supports the school Counsellor and Career Facilitator with the coordination of Post-Secondary Information (PSI) Day.
- Works with the Career Facilitator in the school to promote and gather consent forms for Take Our Kids To Work Day (TOKTW).
- Assists students, individually (and in groups), to access career and education information manually and through computer assisted guidance programs, specifically MyBlueprint.
- Assists teacher in coaching students in acquiring job seeking skills such as interview techniques, resume writing, cover letter, portfolio development, effective job search strategies and workplace conduct.
- Responds to questions with regards to Youth TRAIN in Trades programs and Youth WORK placements and discusses preparedness and skills required.
- Assists and supports WAVE teacher by maintaining records, liaising with employers once placements are arranged, and collecting feedback from students and employers
- Acts as a liaison between outside agencies and the school. Liaises with numerous agencies, businesses and post-secondary institutions both locally and provincially as required by the supervisor.
- Supports students with their career planning by assisting them to collect documentation regarding possible career and post-secondary programs.
- Guides and assists students applying for district career tours, Youth TRAIN in Trades Programs, Youth WORK placements, and other career opportunities.
- Coordinates students to obtain mini-certifications (food safe, First Aid etc.).
- Plans and coordinates field trips to encourage students to learn about various career and program options available to them.
- Assists teachers in supervising students as required for field trips and special career events.
- Collects information and documents; provides information on career choices and opportunities as a follow up to counselling meetings.
- Supports the school Counsellor with the coordination of scholarship sessions for students.
- Assists with coordination of career fairs and other career events/activities.
- Attends Career Education Department meetings on a monthly basis and in-service on an as needed basis to remain up to date with current Career Education trends.
- Maintains confidentiality in all matters related to the student information.
- Performs a variety of clerical duties as required including filing, preparing and maintaining a variety of materials such as career information, student files, non-confidential correspondence, bulletins, guidance materials and memoranda.
- Performs other assigned comparable duties which are within the scope of knowledge, skills and abilities required by this class specification.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Grade 12 graduation and completion of a 6-month Career Development Practitioner Program or equivalent related education.
- One year of related experience.
- Good understanding of career development and planning processes.
- Ability to access and use career-related resources and education planning websites.
- Ability to use labour market information to meet students’ vocational needs.
- Good understanding of the concepts of employability and job search skills.
- Good knowledge of BC trades training.
- Good knowledge of post-secondary and training institutions.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with all internal and external contacts.
- Ability to work as a member of a cohesive and collaborative team.
- Ability to organize and present information related to the career education program and career-related programs to a variety of groups and individuals.
- Ability to work with interruptions and to meet deadlines.
- Ability to effectively use computer software applications such as student information systems, word processing, presentation software, database management, and spreadsheets.
Schedule: Monday to Friday (8:00am-3:30pm)
Rate of pay: $25.89 per hour plus a comprehensive benefits package.
