DISTRICT 0.5 F.T.E. CONTINUING INCLUSIVE EDUCATION - SPECIALIZATION:

TEACHER OF THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Effective September 1, 2022, the District Teacher of the Visually Impaired will have the skills, experience and training to work collaboratively with other members of the Inclusive Education Team (both school and district based) as well as the school-based team (SBT) to improve student learning. This position may also include working with Indigenous students and families on and off reserve.

The District teacher will have the responsibility of providing specific support to students in the area of visual impairment. They will help provide leadership as well as support a strong working Inclusive Education Team. Providing district leadership in the area of visual impairment is also a key priority.

 Teachers in the field will need:

a) the ability to cope with ambiguity and rapidly changing demands;

b) to be knowledgeable of current curriculum goals and instructional practices;

c) to participate in on-going professional development/in-service in both regular and inclusive education;

d) to be committed to integration.

The itinerant Vision Teacher will participate as a member of a collaborative team, and consult with school-based, District and outside agency personnel and parents to:

a) assist teachers to integrate into regular classes learners with identified significant visual impairments;

b) interpret the learner's visual impairment and its implications;

c) assess the level of support required;

d) coordinate/write Individual Education Plans (IEP's);

e) coordinate vision assessments, equipment, repair, etc., required by the learner;

f) provide instruction in Braille and/or Orientation and Mobility;

g) identify and order materials and equipment through the District and the
    Provincial Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired;

h) provide or arrange in-service surrounding vision and vision impairments;

i) maintain a liaison with CNIB;

j) provide consultation for parents of learners who are visually impaired;

k) model and provide information regarding inclusive practices.

MINIMUM ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

a) valid B.C. Teaching Certificate; 

b) a Diploma in the education of learners who are blind or visually impaired;

c) minimum of two years satisfactory teaching experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE
 

a) training in Orientation and Mobility;

b) satisfactory teaching experience in both regular and special class settings;

c) a Master's Degree in the Education of Learners who are blind or visually impaired.

REPORTING STRUCTURE

The personnel in this position are accountable in the execution of their assigned duties to the District Coordinator of Inclusive Education.

All District staff must be willing and prepared to work at both the elementary and secondary levels.

All itinerant based positions are district positions and the location (s) of assignments are determined by the Inclusive Education Department and may be changed subject to operational and student needs.
