TRADES - HVAC Technician 1
40 Hours per week, 12 months
This unionized position is 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Upon successful completion of probation, the employee will have access to a comprehensive benefits package that includes extended health and dental benefits, LTD coverage, and Municipal Pension Plan.

THE ROLE
This is skilled HVAC work involving maintenance, repair, alteration and installation tasks throughout the School District. An employee of this class exercises considerable independent judgement in completing assignments, and may oversee the work of one or more helpers engaged in less skilled tasks. Completes verbal and written work orders, which may be accompanied by plans, drawings and specifications that are received from a manager or coordinator. Work may be reviewed in terms of quality of workmanship, conformance with standards and objectives. New construction or extended renovations may be required to be inspected by Provincial or Municipal Inspectors.
WHAT WE REQUIRE
- Thorough knowledge of the current standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the hazards and proper safety precautions of the trade.
- Considerable knowledge of the applicable by-laws, rules, regulations and codes governing the trade work performed.
- Considerable/working knowledge of the electrical trade and/or other mechanical trades necessary to install, maintain, and repair equipment, systems and physical plant.
- Considerable demonstrated working knowledge of the installation or alteration of any gas system, except vehicle fuel systems, under an appropriate permit
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to troubleshoot direct digital control software and hardware applicable to the trade.
- Ability to perform a variety of skilled tasks to established standards.
- Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner using considerable independent judgement.
- Ability to read, interpret plans, drawings and specifications; maintain records; estimate materials needed; requisition parts and materials; and complete work documentation and reports as required.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, other trades, and outside contractors and work in a team environment as necessary.
- Oversee, coordinate and work with external contractors and service providers.
- Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving heavy materials, equipment and supplies up to 50lbs without assistance; and work in confined spaces, climb ladders and work at heights to service equipment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing using courtesy and tact in the explanation and exchange of information.
- Skill in the use and care of tools, materials and equipment used in the trade.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of the 12th grade or equivalent, supplemented by technical courses related to the work, plus completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade and two (2) years of related experience as a tradesperson in the plumber/pipe fitter/refrigeration/HVAC service industry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES AND REGISTRATIONS
- B.C. or Interprovincial Trade Qualification (TQ) for Plumbing/Pipe Fitting; Refrigeration and Air Conditioning; or equivalent such as 4th Class Power Engineering Certificate
- A valid Class “B” Gas Ticket with electrical endorsement
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
- Vendor specific automation system training is an asset
This is a unionized position, and the current rate of pay is $35.61 per hour, plus a comprehensive benefit package including Municipal Pension, health, vacation, and sick benefits.
