This individual will service one of the elementary schools in Grand Forks. This person will work in collaboration with the Boundary Indigenous Education Team as well as school staff.
OVERVIEW
The Indigenous Culture and Student Success Facilitator reports to and receives direction from school principals of the sites they support in collaboration with the District Vice Principal of Innovation and Inquiry and School District 51’s Elder In-Residence. The Indigenous Culture and Student Success Facilitator provides support and guidance from an equity and strength-based perspective. This individual has in depth knowledge of First Peoples Principles of Learning, Truth and Reconciliation and Indigenous Worldviews & Perspectives. As a role model and cultural interpreter, they will assist staff and Indigenous and non-Indigenous students in the understanding of Indigenous perspectives of culture, heritage, values, and history. This continuing position will be seven (7) hours per day, four (4) days per week, ten (10) months per year.
Required Qualifications and Education:
- Demonstrated success in leading student groups through authentic cultural experiences.
- Demonstrated successful experience dealing with professional staff and parents.
- Must be a strong advocate for youth with Indigenous ancestry.
- Must have experience and authentic knowledge of Indigenous culture and issues.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Indigenous Culture and Student Success Facilitator:
- Provides academic encouragement and assistance to Indigenous students to achieve success by coaching, explaining, and enhancing their learning experiences in a group or individual setting.
- Assists in the completion of Indigenous Student Learning Plans for all assigned Indigenous students.
- Monitors Indigenous student attendance and encourages regular participation in school and extracurricular activities.
- Provides mentoring and support to Indigenous students to help strengthen their cultural and individual identities.
- Facilitates the understanding of Indigenous perspectives of culture, heritage, values and history to Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students and the school staff.
- Assists in organizing and facilitating cultural presentations and field trips with students to support the goals of the Boundary Indigenous Education Enhancement Agreement.
- Creating and maintaining a vibrant, culturally rich, safe space for Indigenous students in the school.
- Attends monthly meetings of the SD51 Indigenous Education Advisory Council.
- Performs other assigned comparable or transient duties which are within the area of knowledge and skills required by this job description.
The wage rate is between $20.90/hour and $26.13/hour depending on certification and experience. Position also includes a comprehensive benefits package and on-going opportunities for professional development.
