SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
The Superintendent of Schools (“Superintendent”) is the Chief Executive Officer of the District, reporting directly to the Board of Education, and is accountable to it for the conduct, operation, and results of the District. Board authority delegated to District staff through the Superintendent. The Superintendent is entrusted with the responsibility of improving student achievement, ensuring that the organization, administration, supervision, and evaluation of all educational programs, business, and operations in the District respond to this responsibility. The Superintendent is accountable to the Board, which represents the public trust, students, staff and the communities that are served through public education. The Superintendent is also accountable to the Minister of Education and is bound to ensure compliance with all legal, fiscal and regulatory statutes and requirements in the Province. The Superintendent is responsive to multiple stakeholder groups throughout the District’s communities

Details of Function
• Assist the Board in carrying out its responsibilities as outlined in the School Act and Regulations and in
local Board policies;
• Assist the Board in developing policy and arranging for review and revision of these policies as required;
• Recommend an organizational structure that will ensure that educational and administrative functions
are carried out and that all resources are used efficiently and effectively;
• Recommend programs to the Board that are consistent with district and Ministry goals;
• Lead the recruitment, selection, assignment, and evaluation of all staff to facilitate effective performance;
• Supervise the preparation and submission of the district’s annual operating and capital budgets;
• Assist the Board in matters relating to its meetings;
• Assist the Board in developing short-term and long-range plans;
• Maintain an effective relationship with staff in matters relating to the education and services to schools;
• Develop programs with administrators to assist in the supervision of staff;
• Supervise the appropriate assignment of administrators and establish procedures for identifying staff
members with administrative potential;
• Supervise plans, programs, and services in all schools and departments;
• Encourage programs and practices that develop a sense of pride and accomplishment in the system;
• Promote in-service education for all staff;
• Maintain a climate of cooperation and communication between the school district and the community;
• Provide the public with access to information about the school district;
• Act as a spokesperson for the district and the Ministry as required;
• Maintain an involvement in the educational community and liaison with officials in other districts;
• Interpret and ensure execution of the policies and regulations of the Ministry of Education as outlined in
the School Act, the School Act Regulations, and official Ministry statements;
• Advise the Board in exercising its duties as specified in the Act, Regulations and Ministry statements;
• Perform the duties assigned to the Superintendent in the Act, Regulations and Ministry statements;
• Supervise instructional programs within the district; and
• Provide other assistance to the Ministry as required and perform duties requested by the Minister.
The Superintendent should be an empathetic leader and educator who is well experienced with the complexities of large public education organizations. Possessing an inclusive and transparent leadership style, they build engagement by creating a true team environment, leveraging the considerable expertise and strengths that exist within the District. The Superintendent should be decisive, and possess sufficient business acumen, policy, systems, and planning expertise to assist Abbotsford School District with complex decision making, as well as guiding staff through challenging initiatives.
Professional and Personal Qualifications
The ideal candidate will meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:
• A minimum of a master’s degree in a relevant discipline;
• Executive-level leadership and deep operational management experience in a school district or similar
public sector organization;
• Experience and genuine alignment with supporting Indigenous learners, implementing the Truth &
Reconciliation Commission's calls to action, and implementing Indigenous ways of knowing across the
District;
• Ability to lead diverse, high performing teams; displays courageous leadership and drives accountability;
• Fluency with information technology, computerized financial systems, and excellent analytical skills;
• Proven ability to build positive relationships with the Board of Education, community, government
officials, Indigenous partners, and stakeholder groups;
• Exemplary interpersonal and people development skills at the individual and group level; and
• Experience in media relations, communication and public speaking, and conflict resolution.
