Sunrise Waldorf School is seeking an experienced and dynamic 5th-8th grade woodworking teacher to join our dedicated faculty beginning 2022-2023. The position requires authentic warmth, good humour, joy, and enthusiasm for working with children. The ideal candidate must also have familiarity or interest in best practices of Waldorf education.

The woodworking teacher will be able to work collaboratively to schedule, plan and assess developmentally appropriate projects, with an understanding that students within a given class will make progress on their work at varying rates. The ideal candidate will have completed Waldorf training and have teaching experience in a Waldorf school, as well as a history of strong classroom management and assessment along with the ability to maintain professional relationships with parents, faculty and staff.

This is a part-time position compensated hourly or as a salaried position depending on the suitability and availability of the candidate. Days of work could range from 3-5 days per week.

Qualifications

Candidates for this position ideally have experience working with middle school aged students and working in a Waldorf setting. In addition, the woodworking teacher should have excellent skills working with hand tools. Ideal candidate will also possess:

• BC Teaching Certificate, or equivalent;

• Waldorf training and experience (preferred);

• Legally able to work in Canada;

• Demonstrated enthusiasm for Waldorf education;

• Experience in teaching elementary and middle school students;

• Confident classroom presence, classroom management skills and positive discipline strategies;

• Ability to self-start and create lesson and assessment plans for a range of abilities;

• Facility in working with hand tools and wood;

• Skill in leading woodworking projects with students that may include carving and constructing;

• An eagerness to collaborate deeply with colleagues and school parents;

• 3–5 years of experience working with children (preferred).

Responsibilities:

• Work cooperatively with colleagues to support the woodworking program;

• Engage in professional development;

• Collaborate with team members to facilitate interdisciplinary instruction that is inclusive of all learners;

• Maintain the woodworking area and equipment;

• Maintain a positive learning environment that is safe, joyful, and nurturing; and

• Prepare, execute and assess lessons/students projects.
