Job Description for Youth Support Settlement Worker in Schools (Youth SWIS)
The role of Youth SWIS is to facilitate the settlement and integration of newly arrived families and their youth children is school community. Through needs assessments of and systematic outreach to newcomer families, Youth Settlement Worker will provide cross-cultural education, information about schools and schooling, and information about referrals to community agencies and support programs. Youth Settlement Worker will work with middle and secondary students and their families.
Temporary Full-Time Youth Settlement Worker $27.83/HR, (35) hours per week, (10) months of the year with layoffs occurring during the Winter, Spring, and Summer Breaks. August 17th - March 30, 2024 (with possible extension)
The role of Youth SWIS will be:
- Deliver a variety of evidence – based strategies/interventions to enhance the student's social, emotional and behavioural functioning in consultation with other members of the student's support team
- Support grade to grade transition, in particular grade 8 to 9
- Support and encourage regular student attendance in school
- Support the students in developing greater self-awareness, self-regulation and self-advocacy
- Plan and implement relevant prevention programs in conjunction with teachers and school staff
- Provide systematic settlement needs assessments and action planning for newcomer families
- Inform and orient students and families about settlement-related issues and assists clients, to prioritize settlement needs in schools
- Create the Settlement Assessment Plans with goals and timelines and follow-up with clients based on their Settlement Assessment Plan goals.
- Work with schools to provide referrals to various community services/agencies as appropriate and conduct outreach activities
- Develop and distribute culturally appropriate information and material
- Orient school staff on settlement-related issues
- Assist school staff with establishing and maintaining contact with hard-to-reach families
- Organize and/or facilitate settlement-related events and workshops
- Provide interpretation (from Arabic to English vice versa) during meetings with students/ families/teachers and staff
- Encourage and facilitate parent participation in education
- Link newcomer families to resources and services in school and the community, and promote culturally sensitive links between school staff and newcomer families
- Enable newcomer families to advocate for the educational needs of their children
- Maintain files and records regarding services provided to students including information required for regular reporting
- Perform other work duties within the job band as assigned
Qualifications:
Applicants will be expected to be trained in:

- iCare and other as required.
