Library Technicians – Casual
Position: Library Technician
Rate: $24.59 per hour (current rate)
Hours of: up to 36 Hours per week, School Term
Location: District on Call
NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:
This is library, clerical and data entry work providing library services for schools. The work involves a variety of tasks such as cataloguing and processing library materials as well as providing information to school district staff. After initial instructions are received, work is performed under general direction in accordance with established policies and procedures. Unusual or difficult problems are referred to a supervisor. Work performance is reviewed and evaluated in terms of accurate and efficient services rendered.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of library technical services.
Considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations and policies governing departmental operations.
Considerable knowledge of micro-computer operation and software applications as related to the work.
Sound knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Sound knowledge of English, spelling, punctuation and arithmetic.
Experience with Follett-Destiny and working knowledge of French in order to read, understand, compose and type for French cataloguing would be an asset.
Ability to use a micro-computer and software applications to prepare, maintain and produce assignments in accordance with departmental methods and procedures.
Ability to exercise effective judgement and action in performing the technical library tasks.
Ability to deal effectively with administrators, teachers, other employees and the public in supplying information and assistance related to departmental operations.
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of departmental records and data and perform technical library and clerical assignments with minimal supervision.
Skill in the use of a micro-computer and software applications such as Excel and standard office equipment.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of grade 12 or equivalent supplemented by successful completion of a Community College Library Technician program or Library Cataloger, three months related experience preferably in a school library or public library or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
