STRONG START COORDINATOR -

 FALKAND ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District No. 83 invites qualified individuals to apply for the Regular Strong Start Coordinator position at Falkland Elementary School.  This is a Regular 8.0 Hours per week CUPE union position, and the rate of pay is $26.38 per hour for 10 months of a year, while students are in session. 

THE DISTRICT:

The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is a widely dispersed district which includes the five major communities of Salmon Arm, Sicamous, Sorrento, Enderby, and Armstrong.  The school district provides educational support for 5,900 K-12 students in twenty-two schools with a professional staff of more than 1,200 employees.  The North Okanagan-Shuswap School District is committed to enhancing a positive work environment for staff and a dynamic and supportive educational experience for students.

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the School Principal & Early Learning Coordinator, assist in the delivery of the Strong Start program.  The focus of the program is to engage parents and/or caregivers and their children in activities that concentrate on key aspects of early childhood development and community resource sharing. 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  1. Plan and coordinate activities for infants/pre-school age children and their parents/caregivers.

  2. Prepare a variety of participant-oriented activities and information sessions.

  3. Create and post daily schedules for the program.

  4. Establish positive working relationships with the community and partners, and positive connections with other service providers in the community.

  5. Establish connections with teachers, support staff and administrative officers in the district’s schools to facilitate a smooth transition for families into the formal school system.

  6. Provide current information on early learning opportunities in the community.

  7. Participates in meetings and training sessions as necessary.

  8. Maintains the arts and crafts, equipment, materials, and nutrition supplies.

  9. Maintains daily statistics about client contact.

  10. Record monthly and quarterly statistics in required report forms for the District and Ministry.

  11. Understands and works within District and Ministry policies and procedures.

  12. Maintains the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  1. A diploma in Early Childhood Education including a Community Care Facility - Branch B.C. license to practice and a valid Child Safe First Aid Certificate.

  2. Two years’ experience in creating, planning, implementing and budgeting for a parent participation early learning program in addition to any experience acquired in obtaining the License to Practice.

  3. Strong verbal and written communication skills and interpretation skills

  4. An understanding of and a commitment to quality early learning

  5. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of parents, children, volunteers, professionals and community members

  6. Knowledge of child development, family dynamics, community resources and early learning

  7. A class 5 driver’s license (must be able to get groceries and supplies as required for the program)

  8. Such other qualifications, skills and abilities as may be required to meet Ministry requirements or terms of the Strong Start contract
