Descriptive Introduction:    

The Surrey School District is seeking trained, experienced, friendly, and caring individuals to be employed as Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS).  There is 1 full-time position available.

SWIS assist all newcomer English Language Learners and their families. The primary focus of this program is to facilitate integration and settlement of newcomer families through systematic outreach, providing information about available services/programs in our schools and community, conducting needs assessments and delivering cross-cultural education sessions.

Position Requirements:

The job requires persons with a minimum of 2 years social science background or equivalent and 2 years experience working in a multicultural setting with different ethnic groups including those with refugee backgrounds.  They must have an understanding of child development and youth issues, language skills that are relevant to the families requiring service, familiarity with immigration policies and settlement issues, good negotiation and advocacy skills, and the ability to work as part of a team as well as independently. Interested candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English and Tagalog. Experience working in a K-12 educational setting in British Columbia is an asset.
