Culinary Assistant Worker On-Call
A fast growing and diverse multicultural community in the Metro Vancouver area, Surrey is home to 500,000 people. Surrey School District has 73,000 students in our 130 school sites, it is the largest school district in the province and one of the largest in Canada. Our school district is innovative, creative and prepares students with the critical skills and compassion that they will need in our rapidly changing and complex world.
The eleven Culinary Arts Programs provide practical experience in food preparation for students looking to advanced training in this discipline. The Culinary Assistant assists the Teacher – Chef by leading small groups of students in the Teaching Kitchen using industry standard techniques for food preparation, presentation, and food safety.
Called on short notice to work at a designated school, the Culinary Assistant On-Call works as directed by the Teacher – Chef to monitor and supervise students as they prepare and serve food, and maintain proper kitchen sanitation.
Typical duties, as directed by the Teacher – Chef, include:
Working successfully as a team member with the Teacher – Chef, and maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and staff.
Monitoring students in food preparation using established techniques, including salads, sandwiches, hot food, baking and other items. May occasionally need to prepare food for special requests.
Demonstrating correct use and proper sanitation of food service equipment, monitoring the cleaning for equipment, additional cleaning as required.
Assisting with inventory and making recommendations for supply orders, receiving deliveries and reporting any issues to the Teacher - Chef, proper storing of food and related supplies to maintain food safety and freshness,
Following established procedures to ensure food safety and economy.
Cashiering and banking duties, maintaining records related to the operation of the Teaching Kitchen.
Graduation for a one year course in professional cooking at a post-secondary institution
Current Food Safe I certification.
At least 6 months related experience in a fast paced/high volume food services environment, in an instructor capacity
Able to speak, read and write clearly in English.
Available for work on an as needed basis (no guarantee of hours) from 7:00 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, from September to the end of school in June,
