School District No. 58 (Nicola-Similkameen) is accepting applications for Relief Education Assistant positions for the Princeton area to be kept on file for one year , to be reviewed should a relief position become available. This means that we may contact you, if selected, anytime over the course of that year.

Relief Education Assistant positions are on-call positions that provide individual student support to designated students at elementary and secondary schools.

The Relief Education Assistant position will be required to be available for work at all Princeton schools providing support in the implementation of personal care, educational programs, development needs and services for students who have unique and significant physical, mental, behavioural, emotional, or learning style differences. This includes education programs to facilitate the integration, growth, learning, safety, and comfort of students with a variety of educational/emotional and behavioural needs. This work requires considerable initiative, emotional stability, empathy and understanding of the many and varied issues these students face.

The successful candidate will work with students with exceptionalities, youth with learning disabilities, those on modified alternate programs, using sound judgement in dealing with a variety of situations under the general supervision of the classroom and support services teacher(s).

To confirm required skills and ability, shortlisted applicants will undergo an academic assessment in the following areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Written Assessment

Preference will be given to those candidates successful in all of the above areas.

Position Duties and Responsibilities

  • Applied knowledge of the methods and practices related to the learning style and other needs of students with exceptionalities
  • An understanding of the academic course content and non-academic programs as required for assigned students
  • Applied knowledge of behaviour theories, behaviour intervention strategies, anger management/conflict resolution techniques and situational safety assessment may be required
  • Ability to implement student Individual Educational Plan (IEP), Individual Care Plan, academic and other individual programs
  • Provide instructional support to students by implementing educational programs as determined by the teacher/resource team/principal
  • Operate adaptive technology, computers, audiovisual, and other various equipment
  • Implement behaviour management programs as outlined and determined by the teacher/resource team
  • Foster student independence and appropriate peer interactions
  • Maintain, copy, transcribe, files records on students and liaise, when required, with counsellors, social workers, parent/guardians and teachers as part of the school based team
  • Provides personal/health care and physical safety assistance to students
  • Works collaboratively and professionally as a member of the school based team
  • Performs other job related assigned comparable duties as directed

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Grade 12 or equivalency
  • Must be willing to maintain current CPI status
  • Level 1 First Aid Certificate may be required
  • Successfully completed or currently enrolled in the Education Assistant Certificate program, which includes documented training in the follow areas:
    • Pervasive developmental disorders, including ASD, FASD and complex behavioural needs
    • Developmental and sensory needs and disorders
    • Personal care: dressing, toileting, feeding, lifting, transferring, seizure management
    • Technology assisted programs (ie. Augmentative communication devices, Boardmaker, Apps and other software)
    • Behaviour support: conflict resolution, anger management, nonviolent behavioural interventions, behaviour/safety/crisis/emergency plans
    • Learning challenges: learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, learning challenges
  • Formal POPARD training or experience - when available
  • Proven ability to remain regulated in challenging situations
  • Proven ability to develop positive relationships with students, staff and families
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible/adaptable
  • Physically able to participate in a dynamic classroom environment
  • Ability to work under direction of a team and also to work independently
  • WHMIS Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver's License

Salary and benefits will be in accordance with the C.U.P.E. Local 847 Collective Agreement.
