Language Interpreter - Casual/On-Call

THE ROLE
As Visual
Language Interpreter, you will support students who are deaf and hard of hearing with
sign-language interpreting services. As the communications link between
students and the external world, you are responsible for facilitating
communication between deaf and hard of hearing students with their peers,
teachers, and the school community. You will play an important role in
contributing to students’ Individual Education Plans (IEPs) by helping teachers
adapt educational materials, vocabulary and concepts to assist deaf and hard of
hearing students learning in a positive classroom environment.
Additionally,
you will help students participate in the school community and recreational
activities by accompanying students to assemblies, field trips, team practices
and club meetings. Ultimately, your work will help students develop the
necessary life and social skills to be successful in the future.
The ideal candidate should understand and empathize with Deaf
culture and issues pertaining to deaf/hard of hearing students and possess an
understanding of issues and challenges related to the educational context with
deaf and hard of hearing students.
DESIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
·
Five years of experience working with children or young adults in
an educational or community setting, or an equivalent combination of training
and experience
·
Completion of Visual Language Interpreter Program
·
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent plus basic First Aid
·
Membership in the Canadian Association of Sign Language
Interpreters (CASLI) and Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters
(WAVLI)
·
Working knowledge of adaptive technology
This is a casual, on-call, unionized
position.
The current rate of pay is $31.24 per hour, plus
14% in lieu of benefits.
All candidates are required to submit to a BC
Ministry Criminal Record Check and a local Police Criminal Record Check as
condition of employment.
