School District No. 27 is one of the largest employers in the Cariboo-Chilcotin Region with over 850 employees, serving approximately 4600 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in 22 schools. The School District supports approximately 1400 Indigenous learners, as off-reserve, Métis, Inuit and community based learners from 11 communities, which include Tsideldel First Nation (Alexis Creek Band), Tl’etinqox Government (Anaham Band), Yunesit’in Government (Stone Band), Tl’esoqox (Toosey Band), Xeni Gwet’in First Nation (Nemiah Valley), ?Esdilagh (Alexandria Band), Tsq’escen’ (Canim Lake Band), Stswecem’c/Xgat’tem (Canoe Creek/Dog Creek Band), Esk’etemc First Nation (Alkali Lake), Xats’ull (Soda Creek First Nations), T’exelc (Williams Lake First Nation) and Ulkatchot’en (Ulkatcho First Nation).

The District Principal of Indigenous Education reports directly to the Assistant Superintendent and provides leadership regarding the success of Indigenous learners and learning.

Key Responsibilities include:
• Leading and supervising the Indigenous Education Department and its staff
• Partner with communities to develop and manage Local Education Agreements and Enhancement Agreements as required
• Lead and support initiatives to recognize and incorporate Indigenous culture, curriculum, knowledge, and history; including planning professional development opportunities for staff
• Lead and support curriculum resources for Residential Schools
• Collaborating with Principals and Vice-Principals to develop instructional knowledge and supports leading to success for Indigenous learners
• Implement program assessments to monitor the quality of programs and services provided to Indigenous learners
• Support school-based initiatives to provide culturally supportive environment for Indigenous students
• Work closely with the First Nations Education Council
• Establish and administer the annual budget for Indigenous Educations’ targeted funds and report to FNEC
• Establish and maintain relationships with First Nations communities and Indigenous organizations

Qualifications
• Valid BC Professional Teaching Certification
• Masters of Education preferred or equivalent post-secondary graduate training
• Successful experience as a school-based administrator
• Sound knowledge of Indigenous issues, challenges and opportunities with experiential knowledge of Indigenous culture and appreciation of the values of Indigenous people
• Minimum five years’ experience working with Indigenous families and communities
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Exemplary organizational and planning skills
• Strong managerial skills and financial/budget experience
• Knowledge and competency in an Indigenous language would be an asset
