There are over 74,000 students who attend different schools and programs within Surrey, and over 11,000 staff employed to support these student learners. Surrey’s vision is to prepare our learners to think creatively and critically, communicate skillfully, and demonstrate care for self and others.
The new Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies (ADST) curriculum is an experiential, hands-on program of learning through design and creation that includes skills and concepts from traditional and Aboriginal practice; from the existing disciplines of Business Education, Home Economics, Information Technology, and Technology Education.
The name "Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies" replaces "Applied Skills." The new name is intended to better capture the scope and nature of the domain. Design involves the ability to combine an empathetic understanding of the context of a problem, creativity in the generation of insights and solutions, and critical thinking to analyze and fit solutions to the context. To move from design to final product or service requires skills and technology. Skills are the abilities gained through competence to do something and to do it increasingly well. Technologies are tools that enable human capabilities.
Industrial Technology is designed to teach students a hands-on approach to learning. Students start learning the basic skills that can lead to careers in Trades and Technology. In junior grades, students will be introduced to safe use of machines, while creating a variety of exciting projects. Courses are designed to give the students a basic knowledge and the ability to continue into the senior courses.
Students will demonstrate their learning through variety of labs and projects. In senior years the courses can become more specific. They can choose the technology of interest to them.
Surrey schools offer courses in Woodwork, Metalwork, Drafting, Automotive, Electronics, and Robotics as well as apprenticeship training in Carpentry, Plumbing, and Automotive.
