School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a dynamic and passionate educator at Mt. Sentinel Secondary School in South Slocan, BC.  Mt. Sentinel is a Grade 7-12 school, with a current enrolment of 280 students.

Job Description and Requirements:
We are looking for an innovative, creative and flexible teacher who can demonstrate an understanding of the renewed BC curriculum and School District #8’s student expectations. The awarded applicant will be experienced in teaching in a multi-aged setting, fluent in assessment strategies that support learning, universal design for learning, technology integration (including GAFE) and will strive to create an engaging, challenging and supportive learning environment. The applicant will also have recent experience teaching Workplace Mathematics 10 - 12.  We invite you to join our dynamic and collaborative school team committed to meeting the academic, social/emotional and deeper learning needs of a diverse student body in our rural school setting.

Position Description:

The awarded applicant will teach one block of Workplace Mathematics 11 in a quarter system timetable. This is half day term position Monday through Friday, alternating mornings and afternoons, for quarter 3 only.

Educational Qualifications:

•    A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch
•    Bachelor of Education (Secondary) with a major in Mathematics and/or recent experience teaching Math at the secondary level
•    Recent successful experience teaching in a secondary school setting
•    Experience with a variety of learning management systems
•    Demonstrated ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment strategies
•    Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment
•    Excellent communication, interpersonal and classroom management skills


Required Competencies and Experience:

1. Plan, using backward design and differentiation strategies, for curriculum that meets the needs, interests and abilities of a diverse range of learners.
2. Create a mutually respectful classroom culture that ensures student involvement and engagement in the learning process and enables each student an opportunity to achieve learning outcomes through a variety of current instructional and self-regulation strategies.
3 Collaborate with colleagues and the School Based Team, including the Learning Support Teacher, Aboriginal Education Teacher, Education Assistants, and Counsellor to ensure that students with learning and behavioral challenges are supported through adaptations, modifications, and differentiation as required in their IEPs
4. Establish clear learning outcomes or key questions related to big ideas in the new curriculum for units and projects and clearly communicate these outcomes to students and parents.
5. Develop assessment and evaluation strategies that align with the changed emphases in curriculum.
6. Be conversant and have experience with current educational technologies and demonstrate a growth mindset for learning new tools and applications.
7. Be cognizant of Indigenous worldviews and knowledge and establish positive, interdependent relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every student’s unique abilities.
8. Familiarity with the redesigned Workplace Math 11 curriculum including a readiness to create meaningful and engaging learning experiences relevant for grade 11 learners.
