School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) is nestled in the Southeast corner of British Columbia.  We are a vibrant area, covering 6 "families of schools" in the centres of Creston, Crawford Bay, Kaslo/Meadow Creek, Nelson, Salmo, and the Slocan Valley.  Our area is beautiful, vibrant, a fantastic place to raise children, has a world-renowned Arts and Entertainment community, and easily accesses a variety of amazing outdoor pursuits.

School District #8 (Kootenay Lake) has a vacancy for a 1.0 FTE Term Teacher-Counsellor at Canyon Lister Elementary in Creston, BC. 

The awarded applicant will have recent demonstrated successful experience working in an elementary classroom, and have experience in primary and multi-aged classrooms.

The awarded applicant will be innovative, creative, a team worker, self motivated and demonstrate understanding of the BC Curriculum and the district directions.  He/she will be a person who is continually striving to improve pedagogy in a changing educational environment.

Qualifications:
Masters of Counselling Psychology or equivalent qualifications in mental-health counselling are required
A valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch.
Recently demonstrated successful experience working at the Elementary level
Recently demonstrated excellent classroom management skills, organization and communication skills
Willingness to work closely with parents, school based teams and community partners
Knowledge of current instructional practices and curriculum
Strong interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills
Strength in developing trusting relationships with students
Knowledge of Restitution and EBS practices and theory or willingness to learn Restitution strategies
A demonstrated ability to work with colleagues to build support for and with staff and students
Excellent organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to be flexible, encouraging and engaging
Strong written and verbal communication skills

Teachers applying for this position will preferably possess the following attributes:

Knowledge of current instructional practices and curriculum
Strong interpersonal communication and collaboration skills
Strength in developing trusting relationships with students
Knowledge of Restitution and EBS practices and theory or willingness to learn Restitution strategies
Proficiency and current use of technologies to enhance and personalize learning
Knowledge of current pedagogy on teaching students in an inclusive environment
Good organizational skills and a demonstrated ability to be flexible
Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches is an asset
Intercultural competencies and understandings is an asset
Enthusiasm for collaboration and supporting the UNESCO goals is an asset

The ideal candidate will be expected to:
Work in an atmosphere of collaboration with staff to build consistency and quality of programs
Communicate effectively with staff and parents
Be familiar with the school district board goals and school goals
Implement school wide strategies to support the school board’s student expectations, school and class needs
Provide direct teaching support to all classes based on identified needs
Participate in on-going professional development and develop a personal growth plan
Exhibit a thorough knowledge of current learning practices
Be inclusive of local community (volunteers and seniors for example)
Demonstrate a willingness to work collaboratively with others in developing school and district-based initiatives
Demonstrate knowledge of using technology to support student learning
Plan programs of study in all applicable subjects to the position that meet the needs, interests and abilities of individuals to ensure success for every student
Create a classroom environment that provides student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to find success
Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of a variety of learning styles and includes the needs of students with disabilities
Work closely with the school case manager, teachers, educational assistance, and administration to deliver a supportive learning program to a variety of students
Plan for and utilize instructional methods, resources and evaluation techniques which motivate and enable each student to achieve learning objectives
Assess the learning and behavioral needs of students on a regular basis and provides input as needed to IEP’s of students with disabilities ensuring the implementation of modifications including co-teaching as needed, and
Establish relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual
