Position Description

A temporary full time (1.0)  Learning Assistant/Remedy/English Language Learning Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective immediately until the return of the incumbent but not beyond June 30, 2021.  The assignment will be at Bert Ambrose Elementary School.

Bert Ambrose Elementary is a K-6 school located in the northeast of section the City of Fort St John. The school will have a student population of 210 students in the 2020-21 school year, 15% of whom are Indigenous students. Parents are actively involved in our school community; volunteering in our classrooms, coaching sports teams, and assisting with various PAC activities.  Teachers, administrators, and support staff work collaboratively to provide a vibrant learning environment for our students.  Safe, Respectful, Responsible, and Kind are the 4 guiding words for our school community.  See www.ambrose.prn.bc.ca for more information.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Experience with adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the needs of students
  • Experience and success in the Learning Assistance role
  • Training in teaching ELL and FASD students
  • Familiarity with interpretation and administration of norm referenced and criterion referenced assessments 
  • Ability to write, implement and evaluate IEP's at the elementary school level 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use technology to support students needs
  • Awareness of individual learning styles and ability to teach specific learning and study strategies to suit individual styles 
  • Ability to adapt curriculum/familiarity with adapted reading and writing resources and materials 
  • Ability and desire to consistently monitor academic progress while teaching students effective study and organizational skills 
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other staff members (i.e. team teaching)
  • Strong classroom management skills 
  • Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all children to learn
  • Training for and experience teaching primary age students
  • Experience with adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the needs of students
  • Experience in effective team teaching in collaborative teaching environments
  • Experience with and commitment to using individualized and group instruction with a variety of effective strategies, techniques, and resources
  • Strong belief in the philosophy of inclusion and the potential of all children to learn
  • Experience working with children with special needs
  • Training and experience teaching ELL, ASD, and FASD students
  • Ability to work as part of a team to develop and implement individual plans (IEPs, LSPs, BIPs, AIPs) for students with academic, social and emotional learning difficulties
  • Experience with teaching self-regulation strategies in the classroom
  • Experience/training/knowledge of Positive Behaviour Supports (PBS)
  • Excellent technology skills
  • Ability and willingness to incorporate a variety of technology into regular classroom instruction
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to work in a collaborative model with staff on the Foundation for Enhancing Student Learning and with professional and staff development
  • Willingness to commit to ongoing professional development

  • 2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
  • $2,622 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $50,623 - $95,897
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
