The Community: The Lonely Planet tour guide describes the city of Kunming as one of the most livable cities in China. The city is the capital of Yunnan province, which is often described by Chinese citizens and tourists as the most beautiful region in China. As a “Spring City” Kunming has comfortable weather all year round. This makes the city lush with greenery and gives a tropical feel with palm trees and flowers blooming year round. Given its location and elevation, Kunming also has very good air quality. See www.gokunming.com/en for more information.
Yunnan Province offers amazing access to outdoor recreation. From hiking, biking, climbing and trekking through ancient villages, this area attracts outdoor enthusiasts from around the world. Kunming is also a quick jump by international airport to destinations across the Mekong Delta, including Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
There is a lush garden surrounding a multi-apartment complex directly across the street from our school where most teachers live. Across from the apartment complex is a brand new subway station; so it is convenient to live without a car. Despite its location at high altitude, Kunming is surprisingly flat, allowing enjoyable cycling around the city.
With a population of about ten million, Kunming has something for everyone. Shopping ranges from small local markets with lots of fresh produce, to Walmart and high end Costco-style warehouse stores. Restaurants of all sizes offer local and some western cuisine. Those looking for nightlife will have no problem choosing from local bars and downtown dance clubs.
