Position: Primary/Early Intermediate
Start Date: IMMEDIATELY TO JUNE 30, 2021.
(Note: There is also anticipated assignments for the 2021/22 school year to fill leaves)
The assignment is Indigenous Education Support Teacher (Grade K-7), effective immediately to June 30, 2021. The anticipated schedule involves visiting most classrooms in one or more schools per day; up to six or seven schools each week. Schedule is flexible but has limitations within the framework of the program and according to the bell schedules of the schools assigned.
The successful candidate will:
-have proven and thorough understanding of Indigenous Peoples' history, culture, and contemporary life/issues through personal life experience, significant professional experience in Indigenous Education and/or coursework in Indigenous Education;
-be working in school and cultural settings in collaboration with school staffs, school-based administrators, the shishalh Nation Education staff, other District Indigenous Education Programs staff, under the direct supervision of the District Principal of District Indigenous Education Programs and Services;
-have extensive knowledge of Indigenous ways of learning including alternative approaches, social-emotional learning, universal design, outdoor/place-based learning, and the collaborative design of student learning plans (with classroom and other teachers);
-monitor and work to support transitions as well as the academic and personal success of all First Nations, Metis and Inuit students in the schools assigned, including attending school-based team meetings and designing Student Learning Plans with educators, parents and students;
-encourage cultural respect and reciprocal cultural responsiveness in school settings and connect with student/parent and the Indigenous community by collaborating with school-based colleagues to create First Nations, Metis and Inuit cultural experiences in/for classes and the school;
-model effective instructional approaches and collaborate with teaching and support staff colleagues to support Indigenous students in their learning and to include First Nations, Metis, and Inuit knowledge and culture in the curriculum;
-provide evidence of the successful application of instructional and professional skills (as per Article E.27.3 of the collective agreement).
An Indigenous lifeways and cultural practices skillset (i.e., food gathering, canoeing, skin and leatherwork, carving/woodcraft etc.) would be an asset.
