Job Description & Requirements

Penelakut Tribe is looking for a Principal for the Penelakut Island Elementary School.  The Principal is responsible for the overall management of Penelakut Island Elementary School, including the development and administration of the school budgets, research and preparation of funding, grant proposal1s, donations, supervision and evaluation of teachers and support staff. recommend and implement all school policies and regulations.  The Principal will be expected to teach approximately 20% of his or her time which includes leading a Guided Reading Group. The school Principal serves as the educational leader to ensure that all students are supervised in a safe learning environment. Achieving academic excellence requires that the school Principal work collaboratively to direct and nurture all members of the school staff and to communicate effectively with parents.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience

  • Experience working in First Nations schools and communities
  • Proof of and in current good standing with BC Teachers' Regulation Branch, possessing a Masters of Education or current enrolment in a recognized program
  • Knowledge of Professional Learning Communities, possessing strong interpersonal skills and a commitment to collaborative-decision making
  • Minimum 2 years Principal or Management experience
  • Knowledge of the BC Curriculum and IEP's for K-Grade 7
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Guided Reading, Read Well, Math Makes Sense, and DIBELS would be a benefit
  • Experience with grant/funding proposal writing
  • An understanding of the elements of learning and formative assessment strategies
  • Strong leadership, communication and managerial skills  including conflict resolution
  • Energetic, enthusiastic and strong organizational skills
  • Ability and commitment to build strong relationships wit staff, students, parents and the community
  • Ability to work with teachers and community on incorporating the Hul'qumi'num language and Penelakut Culture into the overall curriculum
  • Working knowledge of regulations and relationships with outside support and funding agencies (FNESC, FNSA, IAHLA, )
  • Strong computer skills
