Job Description & Requirements

Custodian 1 / Janitor / Cleaner

The Greater Victoria School District provides public educational services to over 20,000 students in the Greater Victoria Area, encompassing six municipalities.  To provide this service, the District has a current operating budget of $184 million and employs approximately 3,000 staff; which includes, teachers, principals and vice-principals, support staff, psychologists, speech and language pathologists and exempt managerial staff.

We have over 52 separate buildings (23.1 million ft2 (287,000 m2) of floor space) ranging in age from over one hundred years and carrying heritage status to newer state-of-the-art facilities.

We are currently accepting applications for Spareboard (relief) Custodians. Spareboard work may lead to continuing employment in our schools. Those on our call list can expect to work approximately 9 out 10 shifts in a two-week period and will need to be available for calls seven days per week, since our schools are often used on weekends. Shifts can be days and evenings and, on rare occasions, overnight; and a car is recommended since some assignments may take you to more than one location.

Grade 12 completion is preferred and you may have also completed a Building Service Worker (BSW) course.  We are looking for people willing to learn and committed to maintaining safe and clean facilities for our staff and students. Successful applicants must have proven initiative, ability to work independently, be able to problem-solve and possess excellent interpersonal skills to interact with students, teaching staff and the general public. They will also need to be comfortable with current technologies in order to access our work order system, scheduling and on-line time system.

This position falls under the CUPE 382 Collective Agreement at a pay rate of $20.69 per hour plus applicable allowances and 11% in lieu of benefits.
