The Vancouver Board of Education welcomes applications for the position of:

On-Call Office Support


Working in our Elementary and Secondary schools and in the business operations of the Education Centre (VSB Main Office), you will liaise and interact with all levels of employees, parents and children. You will answer the phone and perform clerical duties including reconciling and processing accounts and invoices. You will compose and prepare correspondence and reports and operate standard office equipment. As well, you will provide excellent customer service and respond to enquiries of a general nature.

There are various sites and departments in which you can build your career with the VSB.  Most of our office support positions are school-based, but depending on your skill-set and experience there are opportunities to build your career in Human Resources, Payroll, Accounting, Purchasing, and Operations.  This position is on-call, but is busy throughout the year except for slower periods during school closures (e.g., July, August, Spring/Christmas Break).  

Once hired on the on-call list, you may apply for internal postings which include temporary contracts and continuing (permanent) positions.  Successful applicants for these internal positions are determined first by qualification and then by seniority.  School-based positions are generally 10 month positions (offices closed during school breaks); whereas, positions in the VSB Main Office are generally full-time, 12 month positions.  Permanent positions include a comprehensive benefits package after passing a probation period of 16 weeks.

Pay rates are determined by your technical skill level (Word/Excel/Typing WPM) and whether you pass an accounting knowledge assessment:

  • General Rate: $23.53/hour plus 18.6% in lieu of benefits and stat holidays
  • Rate for positions requiring high technical skills + accounting knowledge: $26.97/hour plus 18.6% in lieu of benefits and stat holidays



  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Experience working in an office environment
  • Thorough knowledge and experience using Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment
  • Flexibility to accept assignments on short notice
  • Completion of a certificate/diploma in the area of business administration or related field is an asset
  • Experience working with an HRIS, payroll, or accounting system is an asset
  • Must be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid Level 2 Certificate and be comfortable in the role of first aid attendant.  The OFA2 training is a week-long intensive course designed to provide first aid attendants with the necessary skills to function as part of an effective first aid program in the workplace.  With this certification, participants will be qualified to work as WorkSafeBC OFA Level 2 first aid attendants. Course fees are paid by the VSB and employees are paid at the regular day's rate during the training.  VSB first aid attendants receive a daily allotment in addition to their regular day's pay.  This allotment varies depending on whether the employee assumes the role of primary or backup first aid attendant at that work site.
  •  Knowledge, coursework, training, or experience in Accounting/Bookkeeping is an asset as this is an area of shortage in our district
