The Vancouver Board of Education welcomes applications for:

Education Assistant (Special Needs) - School and Student Support A

Secondary School Programs - Male Required


Location: Secondary School (TBA)
Position Type: Permanent
Regular working months: September to June each year
Salary: $27.93 per hour
(+Extensive Benefits Package including Municipal Pension Plan)


Your duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of a senior member of the team, implementing individual programs and contracts for students who are unable to function in a regular classroom setting
  • Evaluating and maintaining records of student progress; discussing with team members any changes which may be made to an individual student's program
  • Supporting parent engagement by organizing workshops and events
  • Coordinating with community agencies as required
  • Organizing and participating in a wide variety of field trips, sports, social, recreational and craft activities
  • Supporting students in community-based programming such as work experience, travel training, and relevant community outings
  • Providing support to students with respect to their social and emotional problems
  • Managing verbal and/or physical “acting out” behaviour
  • Supervising students, as required, and dealing with disciplinary problems as they occur
  • Preparing instructional aid materials; setting up and operating instructional aid equipment
  • Providing school & student support to assist the school as assigned
  • Performing nurse delegated duties as required
  • Performing other work within the job band as assigned



  • Completion of Grade 12
  • Completion of a recognized Post-Secondary Special Education Assistant program, or a Degree/Diploma in a related field, and/or extensive experience in an equivalent field
  • Ability to lift and position students of varying weights and provide personal assistance to meet individual student needs (e.g., assistance with toileting, feeding, etc.)
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • The following are considered to be an asset: 
    • Experience with academics at the secondary level
    • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training (e.g., CPI or MANDT)
    • An excellent practicum or work evaluation
    • Experience using techniques of Applied Behaviour Analysis
    • Completion of POPARD coursework
    •  Ability to speak a second language
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain an Occupational First Aid certificate if assigned by your supervisor and perform first aid.  OFA attendants may, at the direction of Employee Services, be required to perform emergency coverage at other locations
